Sylvia, you did not back up your database or use the export tool, all you did was download the files in the directories?

if that's the case..yes, you've lost your blog posts unless you can still get into your old hosting account's cpanel. If you can, then all is not lost, I can then tell you what to do next. (create a backup of old database)

Hi Karen,

That's EXACTLY what I was afraid of. That account did not have a cpanel. The only way I could access my files was through the FTP software, which only gives me the public_html folder and it did not show any database files. It only gave me the folder containing my web content. I thought it would include everything, so I have no idea where to find the database files.

I've just emailed my old host in the hopes they still have a backup somewhere. I cancelled my hosting 4 days ago so it's still possible, I suppose. Depends how quickly they wanted to clean the server, I guess.

Sylvia, you also had to have had access to database management software SOMEHOW, in addition to FTP access. It's impossible to set up WordPress without at least some interaction with the database. BTW, your database data isn't stored in files that you can access, at least not easily.

BUT - if you can dig up the info on how to get into your db management program (probably phpMyAdmin), then there's still hope.

Your old host SHOULD have backups available; whether they'll cooperate with you is a different beast altogether.

Actually, no I did not have access to the software. They took care of everything behind the scenes, I guess. They set up my public folder and I uploaded my files. That was it. Someone else actually installed my blog many years ago and I don't know how they did that. He just gave me the login details so I could get into WP to make posts and stuff.

Fortunately, this is the only host I used for my one site. I put all my other domains on my other host and I've learned a lot since that first site went up. I should have moved long ago before I had so much content on the blog but it's too late now. I'm just hoping that after a few computer crashes that I still have a lot of the posts. Fortunately, I wrote most in Word before adding them to the blog.

Steve's right. There should have been somewhere where you could have accessed your database. Not all hosts have the cpanels but there's usually a client backend of some sort?

I really hope your old host is reasonable and is able to help you out.

In future, Sylvia, install the WP-DB-Backup plugin and schedule your backups weekly. One additional pre-caution that I use, is the export tool under tools in your WP dashboard. What that does is generate an xml file of all your categories, posts, pages, comments and tags.

edit...just saw your reply to Steve...but I would still try contact your old host and they might be good enough to help you. it's worth a shot.

  Come to think of it, though, now that you mention it I might have done a backup awhile back from within WP. Might have been one of my other blogs but this is the most likely one that I would have done that.
  
  I did come across several files on my computer marked "backup" but all they contained was the index page. Not sure what that means.
  
  If I did have any other way to get to the database, my host never told me I don't think... it was a very long time ago. I could be wrong. I didn't have the blog installed for quite a few years after I launched my site.

I'm ALWAYS nice, Steve. This is Canada you're talking about.

I've had a good relationship with my old host, so if there's any chance the files are still there, I'm positive they would have no problem letting me have them. I moved my hosting to a US firm because I already paid 1 year at $107 for unlimited domains, whereas I was paying $14 month for the Canadian hosting. Back then, .ca domains couldn't be hosted in the US. Now they can.

Besides, I love having CPanel capabilities.

I'm still searching my computer for any backups I made. Can you tell me if they would be in a .zip format? It'll help me focus my search.

Any backups you have would probably be in a .zip, possibly in a .sql if you happen to have any raw database backups.

Sounds like your best bet is your old host.

Let us know what they tell you; if they give you a dump of your old database we can help you get it moved over.

And yes, Canadians are naturally nice

except for a couple of JTF2 guys I knew once upon a time.

Oh, wow. I can't believe I found SOMEthing.

But it's not like, a zip or .sql file. It's a whole pile of folders titled after a post. Then, numbered folders inside date folders, like:

> 2006 > folders 10, 11, 12

Each one is one post.

Then I have them for 2007, 2008, 2009.

It looks like the folder numbers are the month. Looks like I somehow downloaded all this stuff back in May, but don't have a folder for 2010. I might not have added any more posts until after May.

Then there are a few other items: wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes, feed, comments, category, Index and this:

xmlrpc - looks like a php file, only 1 kb.

Now, how do I work with this? That info needs to go into the database file, right? But are database files special extensions?

  those are not your posts, Sylvia...more than likely that's your uploads folder, and it's where your media is stored when you add images, etc to your posts. That's why the folders are all dated like that however...
  The actual posts are not in that folder.

  I'm not sure what I should be seeing in those folders, but they contain one index page. That index page shows my blog page with the post on it. It's the archives page, looks like. At random, one for 2008/12 shows 2 posts on the page with all the usual widgets info (categories, recent posts, meta login, etc.) as well as an image link I created to sell one of my products.
  
  I don't know if I can just upload these somewhere or not. If so, where?

The config.php file will have your mysql db information. Using that, your previous host should have no trouble helping you get a .sql backup of your data.

Hang on to that backup you have as a last resort but I don't know of any easy way to get your posts back into WP from the files you are describing.

I don't know what happened, but when I tried to see the cache for my site, it gave me Nov. 2 version, which is the one I just uploaded into my new host account. Don't know why it wouldn't show an earlier version.

In a nutshell - you'll have to import the .sql file you were given into your new database. You'll do that thru a database management program your host provides, like phpMyAdmin.

Without knowing your new hosting setup, detailed instructions are pretty much impossible to give...

BTW, it's great your old host gave you the .sql file!

Ho...ho...hold the presses!

All looked fantastic, until I uploaded the sql file to the database.

It appears that it only includes two other blogs that I had on that domain and not the most important one.

So I'm back to square one. I've sent another query to my old host and waiting to see if he can find the right database.

I did figure out how to use the other one = not Mysql, what's it called?
Poked around until I found the Import button, but when the content did not appear on my blog, I wondered why.

The .sql they gave me is named image3 (my old host account). How will that work in my new host? Do I have to change the .sql name before importing it? Not sure what that name would be.
