Warriors...come out and plaaaaaaayyyyeeeee! (I just HAD to say that!)
(for those of you who didn't see the old movie "Warriors", that's where that came from).
Question: I have Wordpress 2.7, and want a new theme for my crappy looking site. If a theme says it's "3.0 ready", can I use it? Or do I have to stick with the older WP themes? Will I lose functionality or options?

There could be some problems, unless you know how to fix them. Html, css are the same, just about the options. WP 3.0 supports custom menus, so if 3.0 theme has it (and it should), and no backward-compatibile option, you will not be able to use the menu - navigation. Or if there are some featured images supported by theme, wordpress will give you error, cause featured images as function is not defined in older wp, its since 2.9.

And the last thing, if theme has some "custom widgets", those widgets could be only compatibile with 2.92+, or 2.9+. But try anyway, you'll see.

    Upgrade your WordPress. Now.

Seriously - there is a lot of functionality added between 2.7 and the current version but more importantly, some serious security holes have been plugged. If it is even remotely possible, you should upgrade your software to the latest version.

I put in a "support ticket" to my webhost and asked if they could upgrade my Wordpress for me and here is the answer I got:

We are sorry that we cannot upgrade to wordpress 3.0.1 along due to the latest version of wordpress not compatible to existing theme and plugin. However, you can upgrade to latest wordpress version together with other theme, but please let us know the name of the theme and demo URL first. We need to check with our support team before we agree to install new theme.

Note: you might need to pay theme installation fee (depend on your theme) for doing this, so please let us know again which themes you are looking at. Thank you!

I have no idea what their "theme installation fee" might be, what do you think would be a reasonable amount?
Anyway, before I do this I want to save all of my current content, which took me hundreds of hours to write and gather. Is there an easy way to do this from my Cpanel, without copying the HTML for every page individually? I probably should have done this already, anyway.

There are some nice looking themes in the "magazine" style that I like, and are free...but they don't seem to have as many options as the "premium- pay themes".

      Any thoughts on this, Warriors?

First, you can export all your contents with export function in wordpress.
Second, download database and all the files of your site.
Third, disable plugin and current theme that you have, and activate default theme.
Fourth, upgrade wordpress, and try enabling plugin and theme that you've used.
See will it work. If no, try finding updates on that plugin(s), if there are no updates, you might want to find similiar plugins.
