Any feedback you can give about this website will be appreciated as the end result will enable me to help our Thai village.

It's my other passion in life.

Thai Silk Magic

Many thanks for any help and advice

I think it is pretty awesome and I love what you are trying to do. IT is pretty impressive that you are giving all the profits back to the village and is a brilliant example of fair trade at it's finest.

The range of silks that you are selling looks pretty broad and I really like the idea that I get a little picture of whoever weaved my silk.

I wonder whether more gift type items might be a good idea as by just selling the silk you reduce down the number of people who might be prepared to buy.

I am also not totally convinced by the colour of your section Why Buy Thai Silk on the home page and I am not totally convinced by the Wibiya toolbar. I can't make up my mind if I love or hate them, although I do like the youtube wall that it creates!

Hey thanks Justin. Great feedback. Thanks for the idea about gift items. We will definitely look at this as a matter of urgency as there are quite a few things our village can create using the silk fabrics. We are not in the position to create evening gowns or formal attire but we sure could come up with some more casual type uses of our products.

Let me look at your home page comments as you have hit the nail right on the head re the "Why buy Thai silk"...thanks again as your comments are very much appreciated

In design i found a bug in dropdown menu. When roll out from the dropdown menu, the top portion is disappearing faster than the remaining part.

    Very beautiful site.
Your site has a purpose and the purpose is quite real.
What you are doing is profound, I hope that every person in this forum today can use what they have learned to make lives better for everyone around the world. Not just their BMWs and whatever new pictures people are putting these days.

I will be using your site in my signature as well as an example to the power of IM. If that is ok with you?

EDIT: I also note that you have some testimonials, can you please find a way to give them more attention (Above the fold if possible), especially on the home page. I think it will help greatly.

      Hi Bingesite,
I am totally blown away with your feedback. Many thanks for such wonderful support. Each day is a challenge for us as we try to attract the best possible target customers to out site.

We do have a great story but that is not enough on its own to create sales so your very kind offer re your signature link is graciously accepted with thanks.

Good idea re the testimonials..guess it's a matter of deciding what will make the biggest impact on potential buying site visitors....and you may well be right in giving more highlight to our customer feedback.
Thank you again for your comments...our village will appreciate your valuable input

For a average user like me, I think this website looks very professional. However, I think it would look a little better if all your thumbnails were the same sizes. When I scrolled down I saw tall rectangle and normal squared thumbnails, which when combined didnt look that great. Also, I think the description font of products can be improved.

However, these are just my opinions, but again, I am an average user.

      Hi Bupler,

Thanks for the feedback. Very good point re image thumbnails and I will definitely re-look at the fonts used for the product descriptions. Great stuff

    hey there

i like the site, but I would offer something more as a bonus for people to get on your email list.. you say "win" a $200 certificate, but is this a drawing or... ?

how about offering "Get first look at our new designs, 90 days before we release them on our site"

    or something like that

    hope this helps

Peter… Clean site but most appealing is your story of helping the village. I wonder if you could have a small box on the landing page that starts the story, some kind of graphic to draw you in and then "read more" so it takes the viewer to the page with details of your compelling story. Your priorities inspire me to want to be a better person. Thanks I hope people buy a ton of product from you.

Hi Daron. Great feedback and very helpful. We now have an image on our home page that links to our story. We hope many others think like you as we really do want to make a difference to the lives of our village folks. They work hard, never complain but are always searching for ways to ensure their children don't have the same life's battles as they have...and education is one of these solutions. Hence the reason why our website is also helping our village school as well as sharing all the profits.
Once again thank you on behalf of a grateful village

I love sewing (and especially with silks!) and that it is for a good cause makes this really exciting.

So my focus was on looking at the fabrics. I found the navigation a bit confusing. For example, I couldn't find a general page for the Fabrics. In the breadcrumbs there is mention of "Thai Silk Fabrics" but clicking on the link did nothing. Also there were two breadcrumbs for Silk for Casual Clothes (but only one with a link).

It would be good to see a general page for fabrics so it is clear to see what options there are. I like the categories of casual/special/home but I think it would also be useful to have categories for colour and fabric type.

Also, a major market for silk is the bridal market so some tools to help brides (and rank in searches) wouldn't go astray. e.g. a page on appropriate white silks for the bride, articles in the blog on design and fabric choice.

I would recommend having a sample service as this is pretty standard for online fabric purchases. By all means charge for it. $5-20 is normal. When I bought silk for my wedding dress, I ended up with at least six metres of some $60/m fabric - there was no way I was purchasing anything without having first seen and felt a sample.

I'd also like to see more explanation of the different types of fabrics and subsequent care in a Reference section as there are so many different types of silk and if you can't see and touch the silk, information is crucial.

Good luck, I'll be keeping it in my bookmarks!

      Catherine,

This is wonderful feedback for us. Many thanks for taking the time to provide such an informative and highly useful response.

I am not sure exactly why you saw the links you mentioned. we have done a lot of work on this page over recent weeks and maybe you landed there in the midst of the changes.
It would interesting to know if any others in our forum had the same result re the home page links. If you had time could you please re=check and let me know if this particular problem still exists for you.

As far as the other suggestions are concerned we will definitely take action on them. you really hit the nail on the head with your experiences and we are so grateful Catherine.

Thank you again on behalf of our entire village

I also love the idea and hope your village does well. Just a suggestion; there are two main navigation bars that behave differently (one drop down is blue with white text and one is black text) yet the information overlaps - maybe just one navigation bar?

Then another photo navigation. The photos with people in them are great.

I would wonder what is the difference between silk wraps and silk scarves. And how to wrap them.

All in all, a very fine site. Thank you for sharing it.

Really good point about the navigation bars..thank you so much

There is not a lot of difference between silk scarves and wraps...it's a matter of size..and we can save space and confusion by combining the 2 categories.

Many thanks. Like many others in our forum have so kindly provided, your advice is really appreciated

Since I myself am studying to launch an online business in the spring I'm probably not qualified to even give feedback, but here goes:

I have read in a couple of different books and in some other educational material to make checkout as easy as possible. In one book Amazon.com is given as an example of ease of checkout and a model to try to follow. The material I have read said to not have a shopping cart that requires registration to make a purchase or it will cause you to lose sales. Unless I missed something your shopping cart requires registration to make the purchase.

These days while I am preparing material for my upcoming site I look at every site I can to see their checkout system and more and more sites seem to be going the route of easy checkout --- not having to register.

Danny thank you. The point you make about having to regisiter as part of the shopping cart process is something we will have to seriously consider. Of course it was aimed at building our customer list but most of that data would already be captured in the checkout process.

Good points especially if shopping carts are going the way of no registration requirements and easier access.

  • The only suggestion I have since you do have a shopping cart is to add some type of SSL Certificate to build trust.

I like the design, you may want to make the second menu vertical, so that there isn't 2 horizontal menu's, it kinda distracts your vision away from the main nav.
