Just wondering what size monitor people design for. Do you design for 17" , 15" etc... Or is there a way to make sure that your site displays perfect on all size monitors. I use dreamweaver to design.

Thanks in advance

I design for viewers with 1024x768 resolution. If you want your design to display on all size of monitors and resolution make it fluid so it will auto adjust but it's not recommended by many.

Why 1024 x 768 and how do you make a site fluid for all monitors using dreamweaver.

      Thanks in advance.

    1024x768 resolution

Maximum width should be 960..well, that is the most common web design width.

I design all my sites 900 wide maximum. The computer I design on has resolution set at 1440x900.

Can people take a look at the following site and tell me what they see. The background on my computer displays perfect. Can I have some feedback on if a white block appears to the right on other peoples browsers.

I do the same. 900 px renders on most screens and it keeps my image design succinct.

Yes, it does. I run on two 26" LCDs each set to 1920x1200.

You need to fix the background property of the body tag. Add "background-position: top center;" to your stylesheet to the body selector.

Anytime you design you need to make sure the width is not so large as to cause a scroll bar on the bottom. Your site does....

Maybe some people do not care, but to many it seems as if the site was not designed properly.

Hi Steve appreciate your reply. Do you mean that the scroll bar does appear at the bottom of the site destinationmerchandise.com.

Could you also kindly have a look at one of my other sites in my signature and ley me know if they display ok without the bottom scroll bar.

          Thanks in advance

Here are the resolution sizes that can be used on a PC

    800 x 600
    960 x 600
    1024 x 768
    1152 x 864
    1280 x 720
    1280 x 800
    1280 x 960
    1280 x 1024

A few years back most people had 800 x 600 so most pages where set to 600 px wide but if you look at these sites now with the larger monitor of 17 to 21 inch then these sites look very small.

The way I look at this now is that most people will probably be set at a minimum of 1024 x 768. Designing the center content to be under the 768 will be the best way to make sure your content will appear.

On your site I see you use background photos which makes it more difficult as you really need to set the whole width of the page rather than just the center content.

If you have just a normal background then you can make the background only 10 px wide on either side of your main content and repeat the image plus make the body as auto with the content always centered.

      Hi David,

Appreciate your response. I understand what you are saying about the background. This is the only site that I have used this type of background so it has brought this issue to my attention. Could you have a look at one of the sites in my signature and see if they display centred and ok on your monitor.
Also my monitor is set 1440 x 900 for a 21inch monitor. This is the way I get the best , clearest display to do design work. I noticed this was not in your list of possible resolutions.
What size monitor and what resolution do you have set.

      Thanks in advance

        Peter,
I use a 17in Laptop which is why my list did not go as far as the 1440. I understand for people with 21in monitors that this size probably works best but I think the average web surfer never changes the default.

I looked at all of your sites and they all display perfectly for me. They are in the center and I do not see any white boxes or scroll bars.

Set your background position as Steve mentioned earlier and you'll be fine.
Looking at your source I see it's still not set and minimizing my 1440 down it still pops white out.

    background-position: top center;

only 10% of average visitors are still using 800 x 600 which means 960 and 1024 are the most common.

i would design for them all though.

by that i mean, design for 960, and also for 1024, 1280, 1440, etc. by basically putting cool graphics on the sides of the background (if your page isn't fluid width) and only the larger res visitors can see them

I worked for a survey and research company about 2 years ago, and out of over a million subscribers, our analytics showed that over 70% viewed on a 1024 x 768 resolution. So even though my computer is of the highest resolution possible, in my opinion it is helpful to design with target audience in mind

    Kind regards,
    Ramona.

  • It's impossible to design a website to look the same in every browser, platform and screen resolution. So, don't bother trying.Instead, use fluid, tableless layout for your design with % widths that expands and contracts to fit a visitors browser settings.

echo above: 1024 x 768 is most common according to my stats on all of my sites. make your site no wider than 970px

Indeed, the 1024x768 resolution is the most common, although we should also keep in mind those who use netbooks. If your target market is one where you would expect many to be using netbooks, you should also take the resolutions possible in those into consideration.
