Initiating a web directory: is it really worth it?

Earlier, I have made a little money from website directory that I have made. The Problem is that I was forced to quit on it for some very personal reasons. With the prevailing conditions in the online world today, I am thinking about whether it will still be good to be establishing a web directory or not. Good pieces of advice will be greatly appreciated. No matter if the advice given will favor the establishment of a directory or not, it will still be a fact that there will be individuals who will show interests in doing it for themselves.

    I think a new traditional directory doesn't stand a chance these days. The only way you'll make money is if your site is worth them submitting to (high PR, domain age, ranking, etc). They've been done, and done again.

    It's my opinion that the most profitable directories are ones that operate in tangent with social media networks, like Twitter hash tag syndications.
