Can anyone help me understand how to use Filezilla?

Hi

I have filezilla and have never used it before so could do with a bit of help.

It's connected to wordpress and I want to add some plugins and widgets to my wordpress blog.

I've got as far as looking at the 'local site' on the left panel and clicking C: which brings up a lot of files. Should my desktop files be showing in that or do I need to upload them all? If so, where do I upload them?

Yesterday I downloaded a plugin to see if I could learn how to do this but am stuck.

I haven't made any headway with using video tutorials so thought I'd ask here.

I'm also a bit concerned that if I don't do it correctly I might mess up my entire site and then I would really be in trouble.

Can anyone explain in simple (very simple!) language what I should do?

Best wishes

Mary

    Hi Mary.

I use FileZilla all the time and hopefully can point you in the right direction.

You're correct in that the left hand side shows your 'local' files, these are all on your hard drive.

The right hand side will show your actual hosting account where you need to upload your website files so that they will be displayed on the web, but what exactly it will be showing depends a bit on your hosting provider and where you actually end up when you first connect to it.

You say you are connected to Wordpress, what does the right hand panel actually show when you are connected to your site?

    Tim

Who is your hosting provider by the way?

It starts with .. then cpanel etc. I opened /public_html/ to view everything on my site.

    It's on hostgator.

Ah good, I'm on Hostgator as well so that makes it easier.

So in /public_html/ you will probably have the files relating to your main domain (the one you signed up to HG with) and if you have a WP blog on that domain you will have 3 directories beginning with 'WP-'

You may also have several other directories if you have add-on domains on your account.

Could you just confirm that is what you are seeing?

We maybe should continue this via PM as it may get a bit lengthy and you may not want your directory structure discussed in front of the general Warrior public.
