Which CMS should I choose?

I know a guy who does product price comparison sites like this with Drupal and it works out quite well for him. There's a ton of CMS systems that can do what you need to do.

Thanks for your replies. I think I'll give Joomla a try. It can be auto-installed from my hosting, so it's the easiest way to get started

IF you are willing to get into Joomla, do it. Among all the huge differences I notice this for newbies - wordpress can find plugins on the backend and joomla has most of them listed on their extension site. Once you get a feel for what Joomla can do, that really won't matter much. If you want to go further with WP, then you might want to check out some of the commerce plugs like wp-commerce and upgrades from getshopped.com which can create a categorized store.

In all actuality, if you go around looking for components, modules and plugins for either, you will end up putting the same amount of work into it. However, if you want to know what the BEST is for comparison shopping, I would say Magento, but that is a little more complicated to deal with.

NO, absolutely not. Nowhere close! Wordpress is a BLOG!!!! Do you not understand that? It can be users as a blog primarily but as a full site it is ugly, loose coding, and one of the weakest CMS's out there. The only reason you say it is the king of CMS is because you have no idea what you're talking about and you just like how simple it is, to put up your next spammed out site. Plain and simple, that is the truth right there. Wordpress is for people that know nothing about development and design. Don't get me wrong, I have seen a FEW developers that work with wordpress because of the huge base of idiots that use it, and they can actually do decent work. However, wordpress is for blogs, if you use it for your site you will typically be referred to as an amateur.

Yeah, judging by your website you have SOOOOO MUCH room to talk. That is possibly one of the worst wordpress sites I have seen.

Guys, you aren't talented, you don't know what you're doing, and your opinion means nothing when it comes to web design, if you aren't going into the code yourself. I notice people like wordpress because you can get a site up in 20 minutes.

Saying wordpress is the best CMS is like saying the best web design is achieved through weebly or website tonight with godaddy. It is just not true.

This is FACT. The major three CMS's, are wordpress, joomla, and drupal. Wordpress is the LEAST flexible, the LEAST functional and the LEAST attractive of the three. This is the very basic, lowest level CMS. In fact I think reliant CMS is better than wordpress.

Next we have almost a tie between Joomla and Drupal. Joomla, still user friendly, but very flexible, you can do pretty much anything you want with it. Many extensions, but also great if you want to create your own templates and add your own module positions. You have the option for ecommerce with virtumart, which is pretty robust. Joomla is about 100% better than wordpress. In fact even wordpress professionals will have a hard time beating someone in design with joomla, even if the developer is just average.

Then we have Drupal. Drupal is like joomla except more robust, and a lot more room for programming. Very tightly coded, this isn't for 90% of the "developers" out there. Drupal overall beats joomla and wordpress, but the difference isn't too huge between joomla and drupal, it just depends on the project which would be best to use.

E-Commerce = Magento. THE BEST in regards to ecommerce. I had someone trying to tell me it is better to sell products through wordpress... that person is a complete imbecile.

Here is the thing guys, just because you don't know any better and can't figure out anything else, "easiest" doesn't mean "BEST".

Wordpress is good, but for your project Joomla is the right choice.

Wordpress is for blogs yes and thats fine, as for building clients websites with joomla, dont you have to leave a credit in there to say it was built with joomla?

My choice would be WordPress loads of information, resources and freelancers willing to help you get to grips with it.

Every job has a different "best" tool to use.

Sure, you can use a peen hammer to nail in big nails, even though it will hammer bigger nails in a pinch, but really wasn't designed for the task.

And then there are more general purpose things that can do just about anything (bubble gum, duct tape and bailing wire come to mind).

The question of "best" is also in the eye of the beholder. Is it ease of use? ease of design? speed to completion? speed of execution? There are many definitions of "best" for a CMS

With that said, there's really only 3 major open source CMS platforms that are worthy of consideration, and they are Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress.

They can all accomplish the same thing (or nearly so), but each may require a different level to accomplish different tasks.

Drupal is considered more of a developers platform, and is less user friendly, but has tight coding styles that a developer will find pleasing.

Joomla I consider a step up into easier user interfaces, but with a larger user base, and a repository of extensions available.

WordPress is probably the easiest to use from an end users perspective, is well documented, and has the largest user base and extensions to choose from. From this perspective, you can build sites quicker because there are so many drop in modules that do what you already want to do.

I've seen review themes out there for all the platforms that will do what you want, and you can even use Magento (as suggested before) or even BigCommerce or ECWid to create a catalog style shopping cart.

I'm hearing a lot of argument for or against certain CMS platforms, but really, it comes down to how comfortable you are in digging in to do the work. The more saavy you are, the more choices you have.
