Hi
I need to buy some software to build another ecommerce site. I have spend about 3 hours looking at reviews and checking them out. My 2 choices now are

1) Xsitepro (as it has so many features) but hasnt got shopping cart built in - so I would still need to add a free one

or
2) Avactis - fully functional shopping cart that has website features.

Has anyone used either of these and can you recommend them

Also Avactis shopping cart license only allows me to run it on one site. Is that usual for shopping cart software?

I have used CS-Cart in the past and LOVED it! I think you will enjoy it too. You can check it out by going to cs-cart.com. You can run a demo on your server for 30 days I believe.

I agree that XSitePro is brilliant, with tons of great features. Especially if you're new to website design yourself, you can't go wrong. I've learnt quite a lot on website building through the use of XSitePro which I'm grateful for.

Expect a HUGE learning curve if you use oscommerce. Take it from someone that has spent a lot of time & money working with programmers to customize oscommerce-based shopping cart platforms! (We have our own network of ecommerce stores that run on our own shopping cart platform that we custom-built from oscommerce).

Yeah it's free, but you have to customize the crap out of it to get your store to look modern. It comes with an extremely out-dated looking front-end and your options are to buy a template (90% of the ones for sale are loaded with issues) or spend tons of time or money customizing/updating it yourself. Plus, the admin interface is a nightmare for folks that are new to ecommerce. If you aren't a programmer you wont understand 80% of the options in the admin (I didn't at first, and I had already been running ecommerce stores for nearly 4 years before I saw it for the first time).

I would recommend going with magento, cre loaded, or x-cart. They all have their own issues, but they are far more user-friendly and your site will look much more up-to-date without a lot of expensive or time consuming custom work! I've never used XSitePro, but it sounds like it might be a good option as well.

If you choose any then make sure you do not have to uninstall older versions and re-install newer versions when you want to upgrade your store.

  • When I was starting out I used Yahoo as my hosting. They have a really good site builder that is easy to use. Also they do have a shopping cart, and you can upgrade as far as opening a yahoo store with them.

  • Magento would be the best option. It offers complete flexibility and control over the users experience, content, and functionality of their online store. Its intuitive administration interface features powerful marketing tools, a catalog-management engine and is SEO optimized to give merchants the power to create sites that provide an unrivaled and rich online shopping experience for their customers, tailored to their unique business needs.
