How do you convert video files for web?

I'm trying to get my first video clip up on my website and can't figure it out. I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8 for editing my videos.

What is the final file format to use?

Is there a conversion utility in Sony that doesn't force you to upload to a video hosting site?

Is there a better (and cheap!!!) tool out there for converting video to the correct format?

I could really use some help.

Thanks,
Jana

Well , there are free tools that convert video formats.
About uploading them , you can use Google Videos - you can upload long movies and you can trust that they won't remove your movie the day after (After all we are talking about GOOGLE).

Lot of questions you'll need answers to for this one. First of all, what is the output source (YouTube, your own site, DVD, etc)? This will dictate the format you need.

I already output to DVD - that part's working.
I need to put a clip up on my site, and then also to Utube.
