how to convert mp4 file to flv

A friend wants me to post a video to his site or a video sharing site. It is a 192mb MP4 file. How would I convert this to another file format to make the file smaller?

  • i guess total video converter will works for u. or u can send me ur mp4 files via email, i'll convert them for u and resend the mp4 to ur email or upload it based on where u wanted it.

    you might need linux to use it.
  • Interesting thread, from what I have found, FLV is not the best compression format, it used to be years ago, but now its not as good, (since adobe took over it)

    If you have a 192 MB MP4 file, (decent enough compression) and you move to FLV it is probably going to go higher, for example the resulting FLV file could be like 305 MB

    I would suggest, looking at "workflow" in the video world it is all about how to compress and the settings you choose to use, including the size, and the audio you use, if you can find a compressor, that uses MP3 you can really reduce the over all file size, since at runtime, the end users computer will decompress the mp3 file

    Also setting the audio at 32 instead of 124 will help, but only if there is no music in the recording, if there is music you need at least 96

    Google video workflow and best settings for compression it will give you an idea of what to look for to save on file size, it is a real challenge, even for professionals, so dont feel over whelmed, it takes time to learn these things.

  • there are lots of converter on web you have to just try to search for that you can easily find it
  • Handbrake is a great tool to convert videos. But I only convert from flv to mp4 as I find that mp4 is usually the smallest in size. If you convert the other way around, you'll most likely end up with a much larger file. I use a tool called "FLV to MP4 Converter" and it's the easiest tool I've ever found without any need to config. But it only does one thing as stated by its name.

    • I like WinX HD video converter (Mac or PC), for any video conversion needs - it's a swiss army knife that can do many things. I was using handbrake a lot in the past, but it started getting buggy on me. I found WinX HD to be much faster at conversions as well. Plus sometimes I was being sent PAL content and needed NTSC and it converts this perfectly for me. Free is great, but I prefer pro results and I don't mind paying a little to get them. WinX HD was not expensive. I do a lot of flash animation and jump back and forth between quicktime and flash formats, because sometimes I mix flash animation and video. This helped me. My $.02
