version 3 missing differences..

Hi all,

I am building a WP website. and following the tutorials on lynda.com
I am using version 3 and the tutorials are for version 3.

However in the tutorials the interface is slightly different to my real dashboard.

For instance the "My User Profile" in the tutorial is actually called "Profile" in my real dashboard, the interface for this option is completely different. There is no gravatar option under "Profile" wheras in the tutorial "My user profile" has a gravatar option....

Also my back end site has no wordpress.com toolbar (but in the tutorial they have a toolbar)

Can anyone explain this?

  • also if i go tom the "users" button i only have 3 options to choose from (users, addnew, your profile)...so i have no option saying "personal settings".....anyone have any ideas? its as if my Wp has only half the features that it should have.
  • I have no idea what you see in their videos because I've never seen them and will not buy them - for obvious reasons

    However, what I have seen in many video tutorials marketed as "WordPress 3" guides... basically old videos sold as WP3-specific tutorials where in fact they address such general WP topics like get a host, buy a domain, install WP (any version), how-to write a post, add categories/tags/links etc.

    In most of the so-called WP3 tutorials there is almost nothing that is ONLY in the WP3 version.

    I am just guessing that what you saw was actually made for WP MU videos and now they are selling/offering it as WP3. While there is a lot of overlap, the old WP MU is not exactly identical with the new WP MS (=multi-site).

    BTW, I see what you see in my really WP3 installation!

    P.S. Yes, I have an offer in my sig offering WP3 videos but please, do NOT buy them if you are not already comfortable and familiar with WP!

  • The "wordpress.com" should be a big clue. The videos probably teach you to use the hosted platform on Wordpress.com. You are probably using an install of Wordpress on your own host, correct? That would be the reason for the differences. The backend may have some minor differences, but the software is just as capable and much more customizable on your own host.

      What i dont understand though is the fact that on the face of it and for the more inexperienced web designer, wordpress the self hosted option seems to offer much less in terms of useable features!
