Hi there

I expect that this is a very simple question to you techie experts.

I've created my first website using Wordpress - it's a simple sales page and the usual privacy/contact/disclaimer pages, etc.

I have some additional pages that I don't want to show up in the search engines.

Can you please advise how I do this?

Thanks for your help
Caren

there are a few ways you can do this, you can use robots.txt and .htaccess however you may not be able to completely stop a rogue spider from indexing a page, unless you use a login, or make use a plugin to control access.

Or you can set no-follow to the selected page

      OK thanks.

Tim - I'm not that familiar with adding robots.txt or anything like that - I wouldn't know where to start.

imediazone - In terms of setting no-follow, I've got an SEO plugin in Wordpress. I need to set that there? I think I've done that already - i've selected "no index" and "no follow". Is that all I need to do?

Not sure what no index/follow you've set or what SEO plugin you're using, but based on your experience level I'd suggest making sure those settings don't apply to the entire site. You might want to use the "Robot Meta" plugin (log into your wordpress, go to plugins, add new, search for "robot meta" & install) to make things easier.

Hi, then I would say that you should investigate a plugin, simply defining no index and no follow will not do what you want, which if I am reading your post correctly is to only allow certain pages and or posts to be indexed and others you do not want to be indexed, if that is the case then you need to define the individual pages, and or posts, there are a number of plugins that will do that for you, many allow you to do that directly on the page,

I use custom themes with SEO built in so I do not know the best plugin to use, however, there are several if you do not find one, do a search at wordpress.org under extend, let us know how it goes

Thanks guys - I figured it out. Sometimes my brain doesn't want to do stuff that it thinks is going to be too frustrating, but it wasn't so difficult!

Hi, I'm trying to do exactly this with my new website. Can you reveal what you did to resolve your issue? Was it a plug-in that you used, or did you have to change some settings in Wordpress?
      Thanks in advance.
