Help! URGENT! I lost my images.

Hi,

Tough to believe, I know, but I lost the images I just created a week or so ago.

They were done in Photoshop and also saved as .jpg - but I have no idea what I called the files.

They are not in the folder where they should have been, so I can't imagine where the heck I saved them all.

Does anyone know how to track down these files in this situation? I did insert one copy into a Word document, so I'm hoping that somewhere in Word there is the capability to find out the name of the inserted image and where it might be.

I need these like, now.

Can anyone help, please?

Thanks,

Sylvia

I use xp and would do a search on my entire computer for all files created within that few days time frame. Works for me every time I lose somthing!

You could limit the search to .jpg to make it faster.

    • Also search for files with the .psd extension. You can sometimes use a wildcard in your search by typing *.psd or *.jpg.

Before you do that, however, try this:

I'm not sure what operating system you're using, but one thing that may work is to open up Photoshop, check the File menu at the top, and see if "open recent" is available. If not, then create a new image from scratch, and save it the same way you did with your other image. It should show you where it saves files by default. Look in that folder.

      Thanks Kay,

That's what I'm doing now, but it does take forever on my system. I don't always get results when I search like this.

I've done other work in Photoshop since so it's not in my drop-down history list.

It would sure help if Word included that data in your page template and formatting used, but it doesn't.

      Still looking.

        Good idea, Bossanova...

I'll try the .psd as well. Just tried saving a new .psd file, but it takes me to where I saved the last project I did, which is where the other file should be, but isn't. This is so bizarre.

        Still looking.

        • Try to not only save the .psd, but use the same process that you did to save the .jpg and see where that takes you.

Nope. It goes to the same place.

Found only those images with my search for .jpg and .psd. Looking now in my E:Backup drive. It HAS to be here somewhere!

If this doesn't work, I'll have to search the entire My Documents folder. I only looked in the one where I do all my business work, which is practically everything.

I don't know the date other than in the last month, so it'll take even longer. Ah well.

I hope I haven't inadvertently tried to copy the original .psd file and accidentally overwrote it with the second one. EEk! I put hours of work into those graphics.

            Still looking.

Ok. I've checked My Documents, my E:Backup and my CD backup and the files are nowhere to be found.

It's not like it was just one Photoshop file. It was also images I saved from another source to use in my images, as well as several .jpgs taken from the .psd to create a book cover and web page header. An entire folder seems to be missing.

Does anyone know how to locate the place on your computer where you can check your history? I can't seem to find it. I'm using Windows XP Pro.

It was also images I saved from another source to use in my images,
Can you tell from download history where those images were saved?

Several times I found misplaced files and images by only search for files changed or added in one 24 hr period. I've also had some I never found, too!

        Kirk,

Thanks. Yes, I did find that and looked, but it's not there. I also found my History file by going to Computer: and Windows: which listed a History folder. But it's empty. Don't know what that means.

I also looked in the system temp file, but it's not listed there either.

This is so frustrating. I'm beginning to doubt myself. Maybe I didn't do them at all? But that can't be true because I have one book cover inserted into the Word document. I just don't know where the original source is now and Word won't tell me.

        Kay,

The files were from my CD graphics pack. Not sure what you mean by 'download'. I didn't get them online. But just in case, where do I see the 'download history'?

The History folder is your IE web browsing history.
Also, there is more than 1 system temp directory.

Try this: Do a full file search of the "Documents and Settings" and "Program Files" folders for your files.
Click "All Files and Folders" and under "Advanced Options" make sure that "Search System Folders", "Search Hidden Files and Folders" and "Search Subfolders" is checked.
Yes, this may take a while, but it will search the most likely places where files may get saved accidently.

Also look in your recycle bin.

You might end up needing to search your entire C drive. What I've seen before is I'm doubleclicking something and my machine is slow to respond, and I move the mouse and my doubleclick turns into a drag & drop, and I've moved a file or folder and I have no idea where to -- so I have to go searching like you are.

Thanks everyone, for all your help.

While I'm still baffled over what happened, it turns out that I had the files on a CD and on my Laptop. Yet, they are NOT on my desktop, where I do most of the heavy lifting. So I have absolutely no idea why they would be -there- and not here.

Still, fantastic news in the end. I did have to redo some files, however, but the positive side is that they are better than the first versions.

      All is well.

      Thanks again.

      Best,
