Hello Fellow Warriors,
I'm looking for a bit of advice on membership site design and workflow.

What I want the site to do:

The site will need to be paid membership through paypal or some variation.

1- The site will need to stream video (not hosted on outside service such as vimeo or youtube.) maybe (s3 + cloudfront) Is their a better option for this? The media files will be large (500 mb or larger) and many people in excess of 100,000 will be viewing these files (up to 15 of these files daily)

2- I would like to do a live stream to my members as well, how could I go about doing this? (with out stickam, justin etc.) hosted on my own.

3 - The services has to be scalable for fast growth. Downtime or speed to load media is critical. HD files with up to millions of viewers potentially but no less then 100,000 to start.

4- A forum

5 - Live chat

All this with no outside hosting on like services. This will be for private members only.

All advice will be appreciate, thank you for your time.

    Hello TruckerSteve,

1)The Amazon+Cloudfront solution is your best bet for an affordable video-streaming solution. Alternatively if you don't mind too much about latency/speed, you can set up your own video-streaming server on a VPS. Never go with one of those "unlimited hosting" companies, but pick one with hard limits.

2)For livestreaming I recommend justin tv or ustream. All the pros use one of these services. Alternatively if you have the money, you can host your own streaming video on your server. I don't recommend this unless you are tech saavy or hire someone who is.

3)If you need scalable, go with Amazon. They also have a free plan you can test-drive.

4-5) This is standard stuff you can do on any server.

My overall suggestion is to rent a VPS(you don't want to get shut down by shared hosting) to handle the main website, forum, livechat, etc... and utilize scripts which make calls to your Cloudfront+S3 servers. Alternatively if all your users are in the US, then you can specify which part of the US you want to data to be stored in(if there is an Amazon data center there). This will eliminate the content-network costs while giving your users high speed.
