I've used CS4 and CS5...I see very little difference as far as my needs are concerned. I mostly use Photo-shop for my blog headers and some small graphics. You can't go wrong with any version

I use Photoshop CS4 and get no problem. I have no issue with any version I've used so far. So I think all of them are great. But if you are an advanced user and access all features then the current version must be the best choise. Yeah right... that It's simply the best soft in digital imaging for me.

Anything CS2 or after is perfect for web design work. But if you are going to start doing things like photo retouching etc you may find that you can do more if you had a later version of photoshop. I personally used CS3 for the past few years and upgraded to CS5 a few weeks ago. From a web design standpoint not much has changed.

Unless you want to become an artist anything from cs3 above will be best, you will probably not use many functions in photoshop, depending on what you are going to design some of the older versions however might not meet your needs in the Animation or 3d area , I personaly use cs4 and cs5.

I currently use CS4 but I haven't had any trouble with cs3. I use photoshop as my primary tool for earning my income too so don't be suckered into the latest and the greatest without thinking about it. You can pick up a used copy of the software for dirt cheap on ebay or amazon.

Adobe PS 5 Extended Version

So far PS CS3 Extended was the version I liked with regards to the breakthrough features it introduced. PS CS4 was OK but it didn't make me jump.
With CS5 you have advanced masking that works, HDR that works better than ever in PS (same for HDR, noise removal, etc), and painting that does what it is supposed to do Overall it covers many needs of pros and enthusiasts out there.

If you can swing it I would recommend getting CS3 which is the latest version, however any version will work. I wouldn't go back any farther than version 7 though, since most tutorials now are based on 7 and newer, but if you dont have photoshop... get gimp.. its better than photoshop and you dont have to pay a cent...

any version will work my good friend, in fact the older versions are much faster in processing, less entanglement in the code and quicker in processing your data, e.g zooming, saving, panning, cropping, etc. unless you have a super fast computer then get yourself CS5

I started using Photoshop with version 4 and to tell you the truth, pretty much everything in Photoshop works around a basic set of functions. The newer versions have just made doing a lot of that stuff easier to do (less work) plus they always move things around in the menus. There have also been some additions / filters that I think Adobe got from some of the third party designers like Alien Skin.

I'm currently using CS3. It came with Production Studio academic version $350. I was thinking about getting Flash but Adobe apparently can't be bothered to with software that works with a 64 bit Windows platform (their Flash player).

I am currently working with CS4. though there are some unwanted features like select tool going out of the work area, It give me lot other features, to mention one, deletion of the layers using del button which cannot be done in previous versions... there are lot more features added up in CS4... Good one the experiment with...

How do you feel about the workarea? When you want to use your select tool, you canuse it outside your work area. but what is the use in that? any way I wont have any thing to select in that place. What is a need to have select access in that area? I find this feature as not good in PS Cs4.

maybe if you still learning about photoshop, i advice you use photoshop 7 after you get expert you can use photoshop cs2,cs3, cs4 & a new Adobe Photoshop CS5 because every photoshop many weakness and strong some one job what your doing..

Im using CS3, the newer versions have some extra features, but I do not believe that they have improved upon much for web-design related additions in my opinion.

It's CS5 for me, all the way! I've been using Photoshop for a loooong time and this is easily the best version I've ever used.

Having said that, however:

Photoshop works even better when you have Illustrator!

Illustrator is the vector based brother to Photoshop. If you have both of them open you can drag and drop from one to the other! The workflow is really great and they both work together to make an unstoppable graphics powerhouse.

I is a good program however the quick selection tool I think was more precise in 5.0 But yeah I like it quite a bit... More vector than it needs and I don't use most of the 3-D effects
