So has anyone tried making their index page their main keyword page and use .htaccess to fetch it as default?

Have you gone further and made folders of all your categories/keywords and each menu item a folder with all the sub menu items just in those folders?

I think it would be rewarded by the big G

    Huh?
    You mean like
    website. com/keyword/
    instead of
    website. com/keyword.htm
    ?
It's quite common. The SEs doesn't care.

in your .htaccess file, add this line:

    DirectoryIndex keyword.html (or keyword.php)

...where keyword is your actual keyword.

make sure the file keyword.html exists.

when people load your site, they will be loading the keyword.html file.
