Does anyone still design to please IE 6?

I suppose I could say this is a tongue in cheek sort of question. But I got to wondering if anyone does this these days?

I consider myself a "professional" web designer. I'm not the smartest one out there - or the best, but I know enough to make nice looking very functional sites.

However I do not design to make it look right in IE 6 - not anymore.
I was sort of jumped on by someone a few months back - that told me a site I had designed had issues in IE 6 - and that as a "professional" designer I should fix that.

In my opinion there's not that many left that actually use IE 6. I know the computer I had that did - died several several years ago.

To keep up with the internet, means evolving into the better and newer browsers.

Just wondering... what others think of this.

IE6 had a number of issues with CSS and not displaying web pages correctly as you know. Updating to IE7 fixed that problem. It looked the same browser as IE6 but worked better.

There is not alot of users out there now using IE6. You can see in most stats that it's nearly gone.

Sometimes I include css for IE6 but it depends on what needs to be done.

I subscribe to a few Wordpress Theme Clubs (including WooThemes) and they've dropped support for IE6. I happily followed suit.

I have IE 6 on my workhorse (Win XP Pro), IE 7 on my laptop (Win XP Home), and IE8 (32-bit and 64-bit) on my video computer (Win7 Home 64-bit).

I design sites in Firefox, then tweak for IE. I do make CSS changes specifically for IE 6, but I'm not overly concerned with the site looking the same as in the current browsers. I just make it so the site doesn't look broken.

Google Analytics shows that I still have a few visitors who have yet to upgrade.

It would make my life a whole lot easier if I stopped supporting IE 6 altogether. But the same could also be said of any version of IE...

I think most have stopped support for IE6 and for this im very thankful. It has cut my workload in half at least. I would spend a little time coding a site for Firefox, then the majority hacking it for IE6. It would never fail... clients seemed to always still be using IE6, so there was no way around it. Then one day I noticed a bulletin on YouTube saying that they would no longer support IE6 and everything seemed to move forward all at once.

In my mind, IE6 is now living in some bright beautiful area of cyberspace, sipping on LITs, and enjoying the view(created by compliant browsers) because it has been retired!

Lucky for you Mike, but don't be so sure without checking your tracking logs carefully. In Hong Kong at least there are still a significant number of IE6 users - up to 25% some days going to one of my sites! No way to avoid extra work to fix the bugs. And IE7 is not that much better for CSS.

I hate to hear that Richard. The browser is nearly ten years old. You would think people would get with the program. I have to agree with you though, IE7 isn't much better with CSS.

  • I agree, there's probably pockets of i.e 6 users across the world but I don't think there's too many in the U.S. It all depends on the audience at hand, but it's definitely packing it's bags! I would like all i.e. versions to cease to exist!

If someone has IE6 and wants web design, they either upgrade or they find someone else to do their website!
