Convert a Flash Site to HTML?

Hello all. I've been asked if I can convert a website from flash to html for better SEO mainly. I'm not really up to scratch on my web design, so I'm after any tips from people who know what they're doing! There's no animations, it's quite a simple site.

Will I just have to make a site that looks the same from scratch, or is there a good way of extracting layout and graphics?

Any hints or tips much appreciated

I guess, the idea is right to convert your flash website to html because search engines bots cannot read flash but HTML tags. Therefore, i would say its a great choice. I came across this website who convert the flash website into HTML without 72 hours. You may check it: ConvertMyFlash

You'd better take a look around and then post your replies. Flash websites are ABSOLUTELY SEARCH ENGINE FRIENDLY.

Hope you are charging quite a bit for that! I don't charge less than a thousand for even touching flash. You could probably outsource this for a nice profit though.

the new flash actually has SEO friendly texts that engines pick up, but i think action scripts are needed for this extra step

It would help to see the site that you're trying to convert. A lot of the visual effects of flash can be recreated using simple jQuery scripts.

SEO hates Flash more than bad links!

New flash or old, if your concerned about SEO in any serious way, don't use Flash!

It's really that simple. Most JS or J-query type technologies can mimic flash for the most part, if it's absolutely necessary to have flash based site for experience purposes, then be sure to accompany it with some HTML content driven micro-sites!

There is no way to really "convert" the site. If you have the FLA file, then someone would be able to extract the images, etc. However, if someone asked me to do this, I would probably just take a screenshot, bring it into photoshop and start recreating it.

You might check the warriors-for-hire section and look for people that do PSD to HTML services. They would be able to do this too.

Recreating a Flash Site is an odd thing overall. Most people are using Flash for the crazy dynamic interactions and movement. So as wcardinal said the only way to really even begin "converting" it is to recreate it in fireworks or photoshop cut it up and try to match the dynamics as much as possible. You could embed some flash back into certain parts to make it still have a flash edge to it.

For extraction of flash movies assets I use Sothink swf decompiler.

Then with the images and content you can go on and make your SEO html friendly site; for basic effects you can use Jquery.

Even if you outsource this work you should save some money with these tips, good luck!

    zsawevv212,

Unfortunately, most of the programs out there that promise converting flash to html do it very sloppily and the code is an absolute mess to work with. There may be exceptions out there, but I really doubt it.

Some of the previous posters are right. Find someone to take a screenshot of the site and then bring it into a program like photoshop and recreate it there before slicing it into HTML. Once it is in HTML (which is the bulk of the work after the design) ... it can be converted to a WordPress theme in about 5 minutes by someone who knows what they are doing.

If you get a "package" deal make sure that they give you the PSD (Photoshop) files, the HTML files (and all images), as well as the WP theme. Ask them to make sure it validates, too. I'm not big on making every site "validate" perfectly, but asking them to make it validate before you pay will definitely weed out some bad coders.

    Good luck.
