Wordpress - Help Creating Multiple Posts from Large Work

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has a good solution for managing sections of large posts/post series in wordpress...

For example, I've written an six part article series about subversion and web development. I created six individual posts on my wordpress blog and on the top of each post I have the "table of contents" that I cut and paste by hand into each article:

1 - Article 1
2 - Article 2
3 - Article 3
4 - Article 4
5 - Article 5
6 - Article 6

Naturally if I change the URL of any of the articles (which I don't plan to do) then I have to update in six places. Also, if I add a seventh section, I've got to now go and make changes in 6 other places as well.

Clearly there has to be a better way!

Note that I'm looking for a way to do this that would still allow each article to stand as an independent post so that SEO is in play as well.

I've written a book and I'm considering putting it online as a very large collection of articles, and I will not be able to manage this work as I've done for the article series above.
