What do people use to make header logos for websites?

XHeader is free and has hundreds of templates plus you can use it to design your own.

I usually use Photoshop CS4 or Illustrator CS4. Fireworks CS4 if I need the "paste inside" feature among other cool effects. If I need a slideshow I'll import the images I made with either graphics suites into Flash CS4 Professional and animate things.

That yoga header is ok, the image concept is fine but the script is horribly aliased (jagged edges) and looks unprofessional. I suggest they up the DPI from the default 72dpi to at least 120 for sharper/cleaner edges.

For the site link you posted it is probably photoshop
And Illustrator is mostly used for logos.

I always use Illustrator, think the quality is loads better than photoshop and it is easier to use in general!

Photoshop is great, but if you can't afford it, the GIMP is a open source alternative that is pretty good and free. For vector art like Illustrator, Inkscape is a free open source alternative.

That looks like a mix of stock photo and some bad text effects. Could do it in almost any image editor, but I use Fireworks.

Fireworks is my tool of choice, but I'm not much of a designer.

Photoshop is best if you have skills but for a noob its quite difficult.
In such case, you should go for some Logo design software with inbuilt templates.
I use LaughingBird Logo Maker and you can try some more templates on Avenquest Logo Maker.

Both above mentioned are Premium Software which you can grab for free in a promo organized by company itself on my blog.

Photoshop is probably the most common choice, but as others have said you can use pretty much any image or photo editor for things like that. Heck that particular header could have been made with MS Paint included with every version of windows since forever.

If you want the ability to make your own headers for your own pages as you get more and more into creating your own pages, then you really should take some time to learn at least the basics of a full featured graphics editor.

My personal choice is photoshop, but if you can't afford that then the opensource equivalent is GIMP. You can also learn just about any of the other choices that people in this thread have mentioned and they would probably be just as good for you.

Headers like the example you gave are pretty simple to make, once you learn the very basics of any program you'll be able to accomplish that. If you're even just a little bit creative you could actually do a lot better. As someone else said it looks like they just took some stock photos and added some basic text and a graphic to it. They could have done a lot better, especially on the text layer.

Good luck to you. Once you start playing around with good photo and graphics editing software you'll find so many cool things you can do. I learned photoshop by watching some youtube videos and just playing around with it. Within just a few months I was making and selling my own digital photo props and templates.

Whatever software you choose, with just a little bit of effort you'll wonder why it seemed so hard to you at first.

I use Paint Shop Pro 99% of the time because I have for so long and it's much faster for me than Photoshop for most things.

If you want a good free image editor, try Paint.NET . It's pretty decent and allows you to work in layers.

Gimp People use Photoshop as they are got used to it. Gimp has all the same feature but is free

I use Fireworks, in my opinion it is much easier to use than photoshop and it gives you the same results. Plus its cheaper, and you can learn it quick.
