I've broken my WP blog, can't get into wp-admin

Hi Gang

It's been a while since I went into the admin of my fishing blog. Today when logging in I get this message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function register_setting() in /home/defender/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wpunique/wpunique.php on line 497

Because of this, I can't even get in to see what is going on. By the way, wpunique is a plugin which makes content seem unique to Google, I've re-uploaded the plugin via FTP but no change. I guess I can get into one of the files via FTP but honestly...I don't know where to start with fixing this.

Any ideas folks, I'm a bit screwed.

Cheers
Phil

Have you tried removing the plugin from your plugins folder? Also, check your wp-includes folder and make sure plugin.php is there.

    Hi Thomas

Wow. I removed the plugin from the folder as you instructed and it worked...........I love you!!!...uh, in a bloke sort of way.

I wonder if it is because that blog is on a really old version of Wordpress, I should probably upgrade it, agh, I always get nervous about doing that.

Anyway, again, thanks for your help, much appreciated!!!

    Cheers

    No problem!

You really should upgrade Wordpress as updates come out. Old versions have vulnerabilities that are often exploited by hackers and scripts. I have several bots come through and try to hack my site every day.

Hey Thomas, how do you know if you're being hacked? I wonder sometimes if I'm being hacked into myself and what can I do about it?

    Doug,

I have a plugin called Limit Login Attempts that locks out any host that fails to log in a certain number of times. When an IP is locked out, an email is sent to me. I get several of these a day.

There is a noteworthy exception to this, where deleting the plugin has no effect. There are several security plugins that utilize apache and write to the htaccess in the root and the wp-admin folder. If you cannot solve the problem deleting the plugin, check those two files where the plugin wrote to them, and delete the relevant lines, you'll be back in.
