Editing Wordpress Offline - What is the Best Move?

Hey guys

I love wordpress. Its quite inspiring.

But I do find it clunky and slow, especially when building pages fast, etc.

Do any of you guys use offline editors where you can work on wordpress and then upload it all?

I've found a few but most are for doing simple posts. I want to be able to tweak themes, update PAGES (not posts only) and do other kinds of stuff.

Anyone have any tips?

  • Load up a Linux box with Apache, etc and do your development on your own private webhost. It has been a while since I needed/wanted to do that, but it worked well.

  • Hmm sounds pretty techhie.

Why haven't you gone back to it? Do you find online wordpress slow? or is it just me?

    • I find that for the most part, doing online work is fast enough now. Setting up Apache, etc. was done when I was still on dial-up.

Great suggestion! This sounds like it would be perfect for working when I don't have online access. It never crossed my mind .

  • although it is quite a healthy idea to upload all stuff and doing everything offline...but i personally prefer to go for the online work...its much less complicated i feel...

    • Have you installed Google Gears so that Wordpress will work faster (at least the backend will)? It usually is termed "Turbo" within the control panel. If you use Google Chrome then it's installed by default, but most other browsers require you to manually install it.

  • When you refer to editing wordpress offline, are you referring to a Wordpress theme?

I've come to know wordpress well enough that I can edit the themes offline in Dreamweaver.

    • XAMPP is perfect for this. A complete Apache/PHP/MySQL installation on your PC, works with Windows, MAC & Linux. Plus it's open sourcce (free).

  • Use Wamp server if you're on Windows. There you can install Wordpress locally and make all the edits before uploading onto your server again.
