I've recently given my site a complete revamp and mainly want to know if it's user friendly and it's clear enough what servies are on offer and how users can access them.

My main concern is that there is too much and it's a jumbled mess!

Your honest crititique is very much appreciated.

Please bear in mind designs on offer are 'funky' hence site design...funkified.

Thank you

    The problem with your site:

    1. It looks like a blog site turned e-commerce/advertising site.

    2. Images are not "quality" images.

    3. Somewhat cluttered... not a "clean look". Some pages too much.. some too little, no balance.

    4. If you're offering web type services, your website is one of your most critical selling features.

    5. Bored looking through your site. There's no "excitement" for your product.

Valid points but No I'm not offering web services.

Nor am I an ecommerce site with adverts.

I only promote my own services and products with two tiny links to pals sites which are very out the way.

The fact you misinterpeted my sites content so dramatically is concerning.

      What business are you in?

Meanwhile I am offering illustration services. So while I can create the illustrations...creating fabulous looking website is something else

I'll keep working on it, thank you.

Yes. You ARE offering web services. "Web services" can be anything from offering SEO, Design, Marketing, and WEB GRAPHICS.

Yes you ARE an e-commerce site. People can buy your services and products online right?

Like I said. If you are offering WEB TYPE SERVICES --This includes WEB GRAPHICS, then your website should reflect your offerings. It can incite confidence in your products and services by looks and detail alone.

Visit systemaxpc.com and then alienware.com and tell me which pc you'd buy if money were no object. Image and atmosphere is VERY important when advertising your business online.. and YES, you ARE advertising.

What business am I in? ohh lets just say I'm simply a tech.

Most of the work I've done so far has been for printed products so I am first and last an illustrator designer.

Nobody can buy anything from me online without contacting me and discussing it with me first (I'm a freelancer) so NO, it not an ecommerce site, there is no 'buy now' or shopping cart etc.

My site is connected to ecommerce sites but they are not mine. I can't thus alter the design of them and they are not part of this critque request

Sorry but as you keep getting it wrong it makes me doubt your qualifications to comment. Thank you for trying though

Conversely I doubt YOUR ability to under basic business 101. Your so wrapped up in semantics you fail to see the business ideology and fact that's behind the suggestions properly.

Selling your "services" online makes you an e-commerce site. PERIOD. Whether they call you first or not. Learn a bit about business before you put up a brochure website selling "services".

No one is commenting on your e-commerce site links, it doesn't take a degree to see that. Obviously your website fails to differentiate your status as a freelancer. That's no ones fault but yours.

Too bad you've fallen victim to the Wordpress disease out there that makes uninformed & unknowledgable individuals think they can build, create and run a successful website for increased earning potential ....and that's just too bad.

You asked for a critique. You got a critique. Critiques are not always what you want to hear. The smart ones can take objective unbiased views and use them constructively.. obviously you're just not one of those people.

You've proven why people need professional web developers. Thanks for trying.

Last time, this is not an ecommerce site, it's not semantics it's fact.

All my orders are taken via invoice only.

To clarify as you seem confused..selling a service via the Internet doesn't make the site an 'ecommerce' site.

Google 'what is an ecommerce website' and you'll find it's a site that has the ability to accept online payments via that site. I have NO such facility.

ecommerce sites I link to are not the website under review. They are hugely successful sites which don't need your review

Re my not taking advice, i didn't take YOUR advice as you don't know what you're on about. I took the advice of those who do appear to know what they're talking about. Changes have already been made based upon it. Thanks chaps!!

It's nice that kids take part in forums like this but when I want an illformed opinion I'll ask my 8yr old. Thanks though for your efforts

Um... ok. It looks like you let your 8yr old design your website for you anyway. Doesn't take much to download a free blog program and download a free theme in 3 clicks and then try to pass it off as something respectable now does it? I just don't care regardless.

If your 8yr old didn't "design" your website, maybe next time you should let him. You'd probably have a better product. Thanks for your efforts. Good luck!

Not to be critical, but just trying to be helpful - I have to agree with some of the comments here. The branding of the site doesn't match or compliment the funky logos (which I though looked pretty good btw). Everything from the standard WP icon in the address bar, to the jumbled layout just doesn't give that professional, "I know what I'm doing" feeling. Image is everything. If I were looking for a graphic design I probably wouldn't even look at your images, just because the layout doesn't work.

And yes, image is that important! it's everything when you are making first impressions ---

And what business an I in? Lot's of them I've been in the Ad Agency, Internet Marketing game longer than I would like to admit. I have a pretty extensive branding background and have worn just about every creative hat there is... well, other than 3d animation

    • Just a suggestion, since you do graphics, I would make a graphic that says FunKyKISS Designs. Or just use the graphic from here Fees « FunKyKISS Design UK – Logos, Cartoons & Gifts on your header, and change the blog theme to black and red.

My previous version was exactly as you speak I DID like it too!!

But believe it or not, I was advised (by someone whose opinion I value...myt hubby!) to remove the lovely banners I created because they looked themselvs like Ads! So I can't win

I keep making changes to suit others and they like the result but then someone else doesn't. Maybe I just trust my gut and do it until the view pleases me ?

        Palava

        Thanks for the advice!

I like to see signatures that link to 'profiles' or sites so I can determine the value of the commentors opinion. Regrettably there are kids on these forums dishing out advice so I like to 'know' who I'm taking advice from at all times. That's the only reason I asked the business the other chap was in.

I think it's a valid point. I'm new here so can't judge based on quality of other postings yet. I will though..as time rolls on.

ps. I've put my banner back and am going to try this template with black and red

Start off with a little bit of branding! Get that banner out of the home page and into your header. You're wasting real-estate on your home page. Re-work it so that it does not look like an advertisement uptop.

Typographically your line-spacing is too far apart on mostly all pages and makes your content tougher to read. (Example : your /funky-faces/ page)

Your top navigation is strangly lobbed aligned somewhere in the top of your site and I'm not quite sure what it's aligning to? Force left it to align with your page header tags I'd suggest.. your navigation menu looks out of place to me. I suggest making it flush left, or if you insist on keeping it flush "rightish" then move the logo and sub-header flush right as well.

I think if you tighten up your design a bit it will make the rest of your site's services more effective and easier to read.

Just thought I'd throw in my two cents. Other than what I've mentioned its a nice site and does what you've created it for.

I agree re all this 100% but I can't make those changes with this template and so far this is the most suitable template (in other regards) I've found via wordpress.

My previous versions did have the banner as the header and so on, but this template doesn't allow for customiseable header...lawd knows why!!

Meanwhile wordpress bring out new templates daily so maybe another suitable one will come along soon Thank you for the advice.

The right column is too busy. You have plenty of spare white space on the bottom - so why not to put your ads there?
The "Design Services" section is a bit out of place - it should be moved to the top. And yes, a logo will work better than a simple company name.

    Hey palava

We had a look at your site, while doing so, followed one of your links from your profile on WF to myspace and BANG!!! think you need to sort it as malware/trojan links on a site will get your linked site (blog) on a nono list after time with the big G!

    Hope it helps!

As for the wp theme and layout, brown is just so wrong babe! you need way more white space, like your zazzle store layout!

Shorten your headline. You need some kind of header, the page looks out of balance. Change the Favicon.

Other than that it doesn't look to bad.

    Hey Leah,

Firstly, good on you for working hard on your site thus far. It's a hard business to wrap your head around when you first get started and criticism can really sting. So kudos to you.

There's three things I would do if I were you:

    1. Make the very first thing visitors see a proclamation that "I am first and last an illustrator" just like you did above.

In any business site you have about 2 - 3 seconds to stop someone hitting that little red X so in that time they have to know exactly who you are and what you offer. This is critical.

So I would ease back on the number of words you have in your current header and just get straight to the point. Something like:

    "Vibrant Illustration - Get FunKyKiss"

Don't quote me as that's just off the top of my head, but you get the idea. Don't over complicate your message, just cut straight to the chase and then expand on your message once you've caught attention.

    2. Put some examples of your best work front and center.

In visually oriented services the most important thing is showing how good your work looks.

The visitors to your site should instantly be able to glance and say "Hey I really like her style!"

This doesn't have to be complicated, just have some images spanning the width of your content area above the fold, ideally linked to large versions so people can really soak up your work.

Even putting them together in a slideshow presentation would work well. Getting a strong impression out there of your talent and skills is more important than any about information at the very beginning.

    3. Pick out a more professional and visually impressive theme.

I know you've already been hunting around and I'm assuming you need a free theme at this point. But I can point you to some awesome free themes that will work much better for you.

If you weren't in a design oriented field you could get away with the theme you have, but unfortunately regardless of the fact you are in a particular niche of design people lump everything in together.

It's like how people think I can write computer programs because I code WP themes. You and I know it's two different things, but most people don't. They will just assume that the look of your site is the same as your work.

So even though you've come this far, I guarantee you will get more business from a theme that looks more visually impressive.

And as I'm guessing you need a free one at this stage, I picked out some freebies specifically to suit you:

    Padd Solutions Masagana

Padd Solutions Magiting | Just another WordPress weblog | Padd Solutions Magiting

    Padd Solutions Kryptonation

(Look in the footer of those three for download links)

All five are free giveaways from top class premium theme creators. So while they're free, the quality is extremely high. I've worked with a couple of them and they're easy to use.

So if I were you I would:

    1. Install one of the above themes
      .
    2. Change the header / site title to something like "Vibrant Illustration - Get FunKyKiss
      .
    3. Put some eye catching work examples above your other content

I promise you that those three steps alone will increase your response rate from potential clients.

    Cheers,

    - Kezz

Hi Kezz, two out of three ain't bad

I've implement the rewording of heading text and put some samples in front page. New template will have to wait for now!! I can't face changing it again at the moment. It's so annoying that this template doesn't allow for customized header as I feel of all the free templates it is the nicest aside from that one flaw...quite major flaw!!

      Thanks for the great advice

I agree to the post above. Make your homepage says what you do. Put those stunning artworks on the homepage and make it big or have them on a slider. To be honest if i am looking for a service like yours i would be kinda turned off to see your site. If you can't make it really stand out make it just very simple. Check my site you might get something from it.

    Goodluck!

A little bit more customization would go a long way. I'm getting a cookie-cutter "templatey" vibe right now. Perhaps integrating some of your designs and overall artistic style into the actual graphics/UI of the website would go a long way. Perhaps a nice large background or header graphic using your doodles/art style as design elements. Get a custom favicon as well.

P.S. The tone of some of the other respondents seemed a bit mean. It could be just me b/c I'm new here, but presenting constructive criticisms means delivering them in a gracious and friendly manner. I'm not saying sugar-coat it, just be nice!

Best of luck with your site.
