Why Can't I edit a PNG file in Adobe Fireworks CS5?

I had a guy on fiverr create an image for me, and it was delivered to me in png format. But when i open the file it says (Bitmap) in parenthesis. Is this file flattened? If so, is there a way to unflatten a PNG file in Fireworks? Thanks.

Not that I know of. you need the unflattened png source.

A png is a bitmap graphic as opposed to a vector graphic. That's all that means. You can edit to your heart's content.

Now that I read your question - no, you can't "unflatten" a png image, pngs are not multi-layered. So in that respect, it wasn't "flattened" to begin with. Whoever created it exported their layered image file (if there ever was one) to a png image. Layers are merged as part of the export process.

If you want to change something, you can always ask for the source file. Might cost you more than a fiverrr, tho...

    • I got it figured out, he did send me the source file. Anyone looking for graphics on fiver, i would recommend alexford, he did this job within 2 hours and even sent me the source file.

Just to update you that png files if not merged before export are fully layered and can be saved as a layered image just like photoshop.

I would guess the png's you have used have been merged png's that do not have layers, but many designers still design full complex websites in fireworks and distribute them as layered png.

      Thanks Balds,

        Thanks Balds,
        I don't need updating, thanks.

The 'layered' .png files that Fireworks creates are NOT standard .png files and can only be edited in Fireworks. Opening in any other graphics program shows only the top merged layer that Fireworks creates.
