Can a custom header be added to a wordpress template?
If so, how?

Any suggestions on a great graphics person to outsource the design job to?

Thanks

  • It is easy to make a custom header. If you have a template, open the images folder and find out the dimension of the header. ( Usually like 900px by 125px) Once you know the custom size you can get on fiverr and there are a ton of people on there that can do custom headers or logos in the dimensions that you specify.

It depends on what theme you are using to tell you EXACTLY what needs to be changed.

But, you either have to edit the CSS or header.php

On fiverr it would be 5.00 US. There are probably folks here on the WF in the "For Hire" section that could get you set up too.

Most themes allow for a custom header. The last one I created for myself was 900 x 222 (I think). I created mine using gimp then uploaded it too my wordpress site.

Here is how I created the last one . . .

    1. Opened up gimp and started a new template for the stated size.
    2. Set the background as black and did a bucket fill on the first layer
    3. Added a new layer
    4. Used the rectangle select tool and selected a region that was about 90% of the layer
    5. Make sure the "rounded corners" option is checked and select the degree you want them rounded.
    6. I did a bucket fill for white on this new area
    7. I pasted in a small pic of a paint gun (if your background is white you don't have to worry about "cutting" the pic)
    8. Added a new layer
    9. Used the Text select tool and added in the heading
    10. Chose color or text to match the pic by using the "color picker"
    11. Repeated steps 9-11 for subheading
    12. Add New Layer
    13. Use rectangle select to select a small area under the main text (don't forget rounded corners)
    14. Used the drop shadow effect on this area to add a small shadow under the site title
    15. Merge all visible layers and save as a .jpg or .png

This took me about 15 mins to create the header seen here Auto Paint Guns

One suggestion, though, make sure all layers are aligned correctly before you merge and save or you might get a small flaw like in the header I created (there is a small white line on the right) but this looks way better than the default one that came with the theme and gives the site more personality.

If this is too complicated I can always do it for you or I will be glad to answer any questions.

    Hope this helps

That is a unique theme, the header is a little different than typical with the RSS button and what not within the header, does the theme have a "header" option? I use the graphene and painter themes alot and both allow you to upload a custom header with just a few clicks and you don't have to mess around with css or php (I'm a technotard sometimes, lol).

Hope this helps Let me know if you have more questions.
