Hi warriors,

I am being selfish . I want to learn from your experience so here are a few questions for you.

How much do you pay or will you pay for QUALITY:

  1. WordPress installation
  2. WP Theme Customization
  3. Custom WP Theme

      Thanks for your feedback.

      Just a few clarifications:
      1) A WP installation takes at least 1 hour to upload files, themes and plugins, create htaccess and make all the necessary settings. Do you still think $10 is the max one should pay?
      2) How do you expect to get a custom theme for $50? For $50, you will most probably get a customized theme, not a custom theme that is made to suit your needs.

    1. A newbie might be willing to part with $5, since WP installation is a common service at fiverr.com
    2. A newbie might be willing to pay $10 - $25, depending on how extensive the customization. But again, fiverr.com can provide same service.
    3. There are many offers of WP Themes at fiverr.com I do not know the quality - but one can only guess it might be low. This might be an area you could do well in.

They offer custom-made themes on Fiverr?

OUCH - that's crazy! The people using fiver are looking for insane deals. This is not a real world scenario. Any quality legit business will not offer service this cheap (unless they are running a promotion and upselling on something else possibly). Running a business costs money and time is of value. You'd put yourself out of business charging that rate.

Just because someone is offering any product or service on Fiverr, you cannot ask everyone to quote the same price.

I hear ya! My point exactly. I may offer a free installation to a frequent customer of mine but that's because I know I will make my cost for time somewhere else. If you are good at what you do and your clients love your work, they will pay a reasonable fee for your time. They won't expect you to give a quote based off what someone else will do it for.

Not if you lived in another country where $5 US = $25 there...

Or if you guided them to signing up for your recommended host,a nd made an affiliate fee of $50 per, or...

Johnny Truant actually did that second one. *smiles*

I don't think 1 hour is good for installing just wordpress. Wordpress installation doesn't have to take up to 5 minutes nowadays. It's just a three click process from Fantastico or Softaculous.

      1. I don't like automatic installers.
      2. It takes time to install various plugins and set them for your site.
      3. I create .htaccess my self to secure the WordPress site.

There are plugins such as 'Bulletproof Security' that will do all that for you.

If you know what you are doing and use the right tools like I do, I can have a brand new blog put on someone's domain with a theme and all the plugins, including all the plugins and wordpress settings set properly, in about 2 minutes.

That's no exaggeration - that's all it takes and all it should take. That's NOT using an automatic installer such as Fantastico. This is doing a manual installation. It all comes down to the tools you use.

Statements like this don't really make any sense, IMO. Most newbies (yes, most) have no clue what they're doing when they click Fantastico buttons. They create a mess they don't understand.

Installing WordPress properly requires knowledge both about what to do and how to do it, as well as recommendations about best themes and plugins. Knowledge is worth something... it's certainly not just about the time it takes to do it.

Basic installs are definitely worth $99 or more. I regularly get $449 on my "retail" web design site for WordPress sites, a price that includes a custom template and some online basic training I have created so that can actually use their new site. Right now I am working on a $2,500 WordPress site for a client.

I also charge far more than $99 to clean up after someone who has used Fantastico and screwed it up. Usually it is best to just delete a Fantastio-created site and start fresh.

If you want to go broke, compete on price. That's why I think Fiverr is for losers. If you want to succeed, you need to compete on the basis of knowledge, experience and value.

It really depends on the details of exactly what you're offering.

As someone pointed out, you can install WP via Fantastico in about 2 minutes so that's not worth a great deal.

But, an automated installation like that will be missing a great many important features and that's why it's not worth much.

For my theme clients I offer an installation service that is based on my many years of experience getting WordPress to work at it's best.

I install manually, ensuring a secure and stable setup procedure - you don't get this with Fantastico.

I complete a full installation and configuration process that covers security, SEO, sitemaps, htacess setup, permalink creation, stats tracking, ease of use plugins, pinging and a whole stack more.

This process took me years to refine and it's easily worth the $50 I charge for it. So you see it's all in the details. Don't charge excessively for an automated install, but if you learn to do things properly that is definitely a valuable service to offer.

Regarding theme customization and theme creation, I personally wouldn't differentiate between the two on price. The reason for this is it often takes longer to familiarize yourself with someone else's code and template file structure than it does to just code from scratch. You can also be left to fix up issues created by someone else's approach to theme creation that aren't your fault. I prefer not to work with other people's themes at all for that reason.

For theme creation services, it depends on what features you include and how good you are. And a lot of that just comes down to chalking up years of experience on the board.

When I first started I offered themes for $97. I'm now a much better designer & coder, include more in my offer and hence have increased my rates. I charge $600 per theme outside the WF and I do a special rate for Warriors of $297.

If you are brand new to offering theme creation services start small and build up your rates as your skills, service and level of demand increases.

I was quoted 100 bucks for moving a website from static to wordpress, a smaller site with about 8 pages - mostly I was concerned with the style and feel getting transferred over.

She quoted me 300 bucks to just redo the site so that it didn't suck.

I would do the WP install myself - the hardest part that Ive found is keeping track of all the various plugins across my various sites. It would be nice if someone figured out a way to sync plugins across multiple sites.

Never had a custom theme done, so I don't know about that.

10-20$, but some people ask about $200. Go to youtube and search how to do that, there are lot of videos and you can follow them to learn easily. Actually to learn all these will take only 2 hours.

  • I would say :
    1. WordPress installation $10 max
    2. WP Theme Customization $10 max (depending on what you are doing)
    3. Custom WP Theme $20-$200
The last one is hard to say, are you creating a custom header, background, everything, or doing it from a template? It can vary a lot.

Just for the record, people keep sending me contributions ranging between $5 and $25 for my free themes. Have you ever tried to create a theme from scratch? It takes days.

There's different types of wordpress installation

You can setup wordpress the best way so your site will benefit from good search engine traffic or you can just install wordpress to your hosting and domain.

Installing wordpress using simple scripts is just a one click install if you use the right host

Depends on what you want to achieve
