drupal is now hte most popular CMS and taken over a huge market share from joomla.

It really depends on the functionalities you are looking for at the end of the day.

I own a web development company, pm if you need in depth advice.

      Thanks

Can you back up this claim from a reliable source? I think not.

According to Joomla, they have had 15 million downloads of Joomla since they started in 2006. Currently they have about 20,000 downloads per day.
Joomla! Surpasses 15 Million Downloads | Bill Hartzer
Joomla has a huge amount of 3rd party support and it will probably take many years for anyone to catch them.

On the other hand, according to Drupal, they only has about 3300 downloads per day. Association Memberships | Drupal Association. There are only about 8600 modules and 1,000 themes available for Drupal, an extremely tiny amount of resources when compared with Joomla.

Drupal has in no way "taken over a huge market share from Joomla." Drupal seems to attract a lot of "fan boys." Drupal is not special in any way, however. My advice, stick with Joomla for the heavy lifting-- or WordPress for more simple uses.

In my opinion, Drupal is the best. I have been using it for a couple of years now and it is so flexible. Drupal 6 was a little confusing and hard to use at first, but Drupal 7 has had lots of work gone into making it more usable.

What I would say, is if it is a large web site then Drupal is better than Joomla. The whitehouse using Drupal is proof enough for me. It is a large web site and gets a huge amount of traffic.

There might not be as many themes or modules than Joomla. But it does have everything you need. If there is functionality you need, then it is highly likely there is a contributed module on the Drupal org site. If not, with a bit of programming work you could create one.

Themes can be adapted quite easily using firebug and altering CSS. The template files are quite easy to override as well. If there is no theme available, then you could hire someone to develop one.

I agree with others that Wordpress, is good for simple sites because it's so easy to use. However, I would not use it for larger sites or ecommerce. I even create small sites using Drupal. This is because the chances are, it could turn into a larger site and I wouldn't like to migrate.

Most people would recommend Magento for ecommerce but I have had good results using Drupal for ecommerce as well. Ubercart is an ecommerce module for Drupal that can be used for ecommerce and there is work in progress for a new module called Drupalcommerce for Drupal 7.

Drupal is much more flexible when it comes to the development and setting up the theme and layout of the website. Joomla! is known to be surrounded by the paradigms set by itself, and offers less scope to be flexible.

Joomla! is easy and fast to operate and implement. On the other hand, Drupal is quite a tough nut and have always been the choice of comprehensive businesses and enterprises.

Joomla is by far the most popular and most used CMS of any, including wordpress. Look at these stats from Alexa and google which prove it:
How Many Websites Use Joomla: 30 million? | General Joomla | Compass Design

    Some more interesting facts:
    • Around 30 million websites are built with Joomla
    • The Joomla community is big, and it’s active. The official forum at forum.joomla.org has (as of writing) over 110,000 members making it perhaps one of the biggest forums on the web.

The first caveat here is that many of these links will be just links from non-Joomla sites that are discussing Joomla. The second is that many Joomla users will have removed the aforementioned footer link.
We can then search for the occurrences of “powered by Joomla” and Joomla common phrases people use on their Joomla websites. Putting all these results in a table.

    Links to joomla.org
    Google: 357,000
    Yahoo: 10,210,666

    Contains “Joomla"
    Google: 49,800,000
    Yahoo: 26,100,000

    Contains “Powered by Joomla”
    Google: 1,640.000
    Yahoo: 3,210,000

The search terms can provide low and high end estimates and the link analysis adds some benchmarking. This would imply that there are somewhere between 10 and 40ish million websites that are using Joomla today.

    -Quoted from CompassDesigns.net

All these facts aside... sometimes it is just easier to use wordpress for the client's sake... that is if you want them poking around the backend and screwing everything up which they tend to do... (which i would not allow to happen using joomla)

    Lastly,

Deciding which CMS to use based on popularity or most users is not a wise decision and could cause technical headaches down the road.

You should decide based on the needs of the project and the value that the CMS provides. The point after all is to get the project done as quickly as possible with as little custom programming as possible, while still providing the needed functionality and looking as best as possible.

Try this site CMS Matrix - it will let you compare the hundreds of CMS system that are available now:
    http://www.cmsmatrix.org/

or you can just focus on figuring out what you want your site to actually DO then find the best plugins for your needs and if it be WP or Joomla or Drupal, let that influence your decision. Good luck.

      I'd hardly consider this reliable.

I searched Google for "“Powered by Joomla” and Google says "About 27,500,000 results (0.06 seconds) "

      Ok.

So then I started clicking through every page of the serps for that query and by the time I clicked to the 11th page, Google says "Page 11 of about 68,600,000 results (0.10 seconds) " (also, I logged out, ran the query again, and google said 27,500,000 results again, which it raised to 68,600,000 again after I clicked through the results a bit)

So what's the deal here? I think what Google returns as "about XXXX results" should be taken with a grain of salt. Returning the number of results or even the approximate number of results seems like it would be too expensive of a query for Google to be doing for each and every search.

After a while of clicking through the results for the "Powered by Joomla" query, I'm on page 47 of the results. And most (if any) of the sites listed on page 47 of the results (at 10 results per page, that's only 470 results in) are not even Joomla web sites. The screenshot below demonstrates this well....

See what I mean? That Google Books url isn't a Joomla site. Neither are many of the sites listed in the results. Heck, within a few hours this thread will probably show up in Google for "Powered by Joomla".

Also, I'd like to say I think when Google says "Page N of about XX,XXX results", XX,XXX is just a number pulled out of Google's proverbial ass. As I mentioned before, the "result count" went from 27,500,000 to 68,600,000 just from clicking a few links. It doesn't say much for the precision of their calculation.

The top CMS's all have their weaknesses and strengths. And it really depends on what your goals are. I'm a big Drupal fan, and have been using it for a few years. It has a steep learning curve, but I can create almost any type of site with Drupal.

WordPress on the other hand is easier to use and it's great for creating niche websites and blogs. I started using WordPress a few months ago and now create all my niches sites with it. Drupal is a little overkill for simple little sites.

Now if you want to create a site you can extend with granular control than you want to use Drupal.

I've never used Joomla before, so can't comment on it.

also 100% not true. WordPress is by far the most popular cms.....
Most Popular CMS (Content Management System)

AND anything you can do with Joomla , can be done with WordPress. And done properly if the right coder is behind it.

Wordpress popularity over Joomla is possibly due to the release of WordPress 3.0 dubbed as the “Thelonious” which now reveals a feasible and working capability of WordPress as a content management system as opposed to only being used as a blogging flatform.
The only thing your stats prove is that people find it harder to edit the footer to remove the powered by text lol. Another point for WordPress.....

with all that said tho, all the major cms's have there place, and are "better" for particular tasks.

Drupal: hard to figure out in the beginning, but really powerful

Joomla IS the most popular CMS. Wordpress is the most popular CMS used by Internet marketers, because its easy.

When it comes down to it, wordpress is the weakest out of the three. Great for those who aren't technically inclined, or have a low IQ.

Joomla is great and blows wordpress out of the water. Look guys, I love joomla, and am a huge joomla advocate, but joomla vs. drupal, drupal wins.

As a true developer, I have different tools... some sites wordpress would be okay with. Most sites Joomla fits in perfectly. More advanced sites, drupal is the winner, and ecommerce sites, magento is the winner.

It depends on what you're using it for, both Joomla and Drupal are much better choices than wordpress if you want flexibility. When it is between Joomla and Drupal, it depends on the needs of the website. If you need something to manage 10K articles, then drupal might be more ideal. It just depends on your needs.

are you going to be learning it or paying someone to develop it?

If you are going to be learning it do you have (and know how to use) a step through debugger?

Do you want to learn the community way of doing things or do things how you like to do things?

Those are important issues between the two.
    With drupal
    * it _will_ take a long time to learn.
    * It is VERY useful to have a step through debugger to understand what is going on
    * you are more closely bound to community coding practices when you build modules so you will have to learn "The Drupal Way"

On the flip side of those points (which _seam_ like negatives) is the positive.
Drupal does force you to learn the structure, but the good thing with this is that after that all the modules developed by others will also be in that structure. So even modules you didnt create will be in a familiar code format and layout.

Do you want to learn it so you can get a job programming it or learn it for yourself? If your looking for a job programming it drupal programmers who know their stuff always seam to cost more when I try to hire them from the freelance sites.

IMHO opinion, other ways of determining which one is better (besides testing it on your own) is to see how much support that each of the platform receives. E.g. How many plugins, themes, forums, etc. there are when you're searching for them?

I think long term support from the whole users / community is essential. So you want a vibrant bunch of users that provide feedback and additional "content" for this platform.

      Hope this helps.

Joomla seems to be popular with folks who are less techie. Drupal rules the techie world.

Having worked with numerous sites on both CMS and scores of other CMSs as well I would say go for Drupal, always, without blinking your eyes twice.

Drupal is powerful and you can do anything with it. Just wish for it and you will get it done. Drupal is like clay you can give it any shape.

Other CMSs such Joomla are not so flexible.

In the end it all comes down to your requirement. If you need a simple websites with just pages in it then go for Wordpress. If you need, let's say, a community website or various content types then go for Drupal.

Drupal can be tough to learn but more you learn more you will fall in love with it. However in the beginning it can be a real pi$$ off though.

Drupal is very powerful and customizable, but it would make no sense to use it for a simple site or blog - much learning and high costs if you hire a pro.

As to Joomla, it is powerful as well, but easier to master and cheaper to maintain. There's this infographic, comparing the two, might come in handy.

I prefer Joomla. Drupal's not bad at all - may even be better than Joomla, but Joomla is way simpler and less complicated while it can work and look even better than Drupal. It is user friendly CMS, most of things work out of the box and support is just awesome.

I like Drupal better, it's more powerful. But if you are just going to slap a theme on it, I would go with Joomla because the market for Drupal themes is lacking. And, Drupal is about to release verison 8 soon, which means you'll have to make everything compliant.
