Where does the law stand on using other peoples images when marketing?

For example, if I were advertising an ebook about 'How to build a car', am I allowed to show a picture of an Audi and say something like 'Learn how to make a car like an Audi!'?

Every image you can find on internet has some specific copyright or usage rights.

So if you want to use some images for marketing, you have three choices.

You can buy images. In that case you can use these images for marketing. An example for this kind of website would be

    istockphoto.com.

Here are some others paid images websites :

Photos.com - Stock Photos - Professional Royalty-Free Stock Photos by Subscription at Photos.com
STOCKXPERT - Royalty free stock photography community
morgueFile free photos for creatives by creatives

You can find some websites with free stock images. In that case you have to read carefully the terms and conditions to see if they allow you to use images for marketing.

Here is a good list of free stock images website :

    Free Stock Images List

The last thing is to do a specific research on Google in order to find some free usage rights images.

For that let's take your "Audi car" example :

    On Google, click on "Images"

    Attachment 7706

From there you want click on "Advanced Image Search"

    Attachment 7707

Now, write your keyword, here "Audi car" and look at the bottom right of the page where you can read

"not filtered by license" near of "More info".

From there you have the choice from different usage rights specifications for your images.

    Attachment 7708

    Finally ckick on "Google Search"

I could draw you a vector image of an Audi...that is a safer bet.

Images on Internet are protected by copyright and not available for commercial use unless they grant permission via licence for you to do so. etc
