okay well I guess I was getting that error message because wordpress was still trying to update. It has finished now, but I am still left with the original problem. When I make any changes to the code and click update. It just takes me to my site rather than updating the information. Man, this is strange.

Update: I remembered that I could edit the sidebar.php in my host account. I've done that now. But, it's still a strange problem. It would be nice to know if this has happened to anyone else.

Have you changed anything such as the browser? I had a lot of issues with WP and IE8 which were simliar after a wp update. I swapped to firefox and most of the issues did not happen.

You're describing a classic case of WordPress javascript clashes. If that's what it is, it's not WordPress's fault, it's the result of poor plugin or theme design, or a plugin or theme that hasn't been updated to work with the latest versions of WP.

Try disabling your plugins to see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, change to the 'stock' WP theme, TwentyTen.

If neither of those fix the problem, you may have some corruption in some core files, maybe a file didn't get replaced properly during an FTP upload. You'll need to do a manual upgrade: delete the all of the wp- files except .htaccess, index.php and wp-config.php from the root directory, and delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folders. Then grab and unzip a fresh copy of the latest version from http://wordpress.org/latest.zip, unzip it and upload all but the wp-content folder.

Some web hosts don't allow certain codes due to security reasons. If this is the case, you will not be able to add the code until your hosting company fixes the issue. This had happened with me. I was not able to add certain words in my WordPress site. All the best.

This sounds like something caused by WP Super Cache, or similar cache optimizing WP plugins. It may cause strange behavior depending on its configuration and further settings (WP Super Cache is pretty advanced). I remember experiencing the same thing when attempting to edit template code in one of my WP sites, but luckily, refreshing the cache or temporarily disabling the plugin solved the problem, and I turned it back on when I was done. I believe the current version of WP Super Cache is a bit more user friendly in that regard.

Even if it is something else, I agree with SteveJohnson's advice to deactivate all of the plugins, then try enabling them one by one to locate the source of the problem. Usually is a plugin either acting up, or maybe it is just the way the plugin works.
