Basic Photoshop question

I'm new with PS.

I'm making a flat ebook cover.

I have the image and know how to add a layer for text to the image.

But what I would like to do is add a simple solid colored layer like a band that would cover the bottom 1/4 or 1/3 of the image and have my text appear in that area so it would show better.

I know how to add the colored layer. But how do I resize it so it only covers part of the image?

Please explain assuming I know nothing..becasue when it comes to PS I know next to nothing. :-)

  • Select the layer where the picture is. Press Ctrl+t (transform) - it will display small cubicles on the corners of the image - hold down Shift and move one of the cubicles - that's about it

    • After I add the new colored layer and try CTL+T I get the message "Can't transform because the initial bounding rectangle is empty."

  • hello, select the colored layer and use ctrl+t to bring up the freetransform handles. You can then resize, rotate, add perspective etc. right click inside the box for options. double click inside the box to apply the tranform or hit enter. I'm not sure why you are getting that message, you should be able to use free transform on your colored layer. Keep trying, photoshop isn't the easiest program to master.

    • I don't get it. I must be doing something wrong.

      It can't be that hard to:

      start with an image
      add a solid colored layer that covers approx bottom 3rd of image
      add a text layer that shows on top of colored layer

      The want to end up with an image with text that shows up well since the text is place over the colored layer.

      Anyone want $5?

      Just make me a simple video showing you doing this but PM me first if you are interested.
