It sounds like a problem with the zip file itself. Maybe corrupted when it was created, or done with some unknown program that is not recognized by WP.

You can unzip the file on your computer and then upload everything into your Wordpress/Themes folder manually using an FTP client or your CPanel. If that doesn't work, maybe you need to get a new version of the theme - download it again from wherever you got it.

Make sure the zip file is just the theme, and not a zip within a zip.

Of course, if you can't even open the zip on your computer, it's obviously the zip file.

Apart from that, maybe the theme itself is not compatible with your version of WordPress - or maybe it's not a WordPress theme. Try updating your WP and see if it helps.

Well, the important thing is that you got it done.

As I said, most likely it was a problem with the zip file itself. If you plan on using this again in future, I'd suggest rezipping it yourself from the files you extracted. Then, get rid of the bad file. That way, you can avoid the manual process and do it right in WP next time.

Since there wasnt a problem with the files, there was probably something wrong with the structure of the folder. All you need to do is select the same files that you'd upload via ftp and create a zip archive from those. Then you'll be able to upload automatically through the wordpress admin panel.
