Moved Wordpress from subdomain to root, now I get blank page loads

Hi there,

I've attempted to move my wordpress installation from a sub directory to the root.

I 'thought' I followed the instructions alright, but now when I visit the root domain all I get is a blank page - it's not loading at all. Same with wp-admin.

Any advice?

Thanks

*The domain is Home | WSO Review if that helps...

    Hi

Some time since I used wordpress but I think this problem is pretty easy to rectify - if I remember rightly. You will need access to your wordpress database though - phpMyAdmin.

How I used to do this was to alter the wordpress installation path in wordpress admin first. This would cause the site to go offline but would ensure the paths were correct in the database after moving.

Access the wordpress database and open wp_options. Look for option_name siteurl and home. Alter the option_values as these will be showing your old wordpress installation paths - probably.

If the above paths are ok then you have other issues and you will have to explain what you altered so far.

    Regards

Hey, thanks for the quick reply!

I have actually done what you said, to no avail. Both options are pointing to my root domain (where my directories are on my server), and my hosting account where the domain is is pointing to the wordpress installation too.

#1 My domain is pointing to /wsoreview/wordpressnew (wordpressnew being the wp installation)

#2 site url and home in the database are both pointing to http://www.wsoreview.net/

#3 I have gone through each of the steps at Changing The Site URL « WordPress Codex to no avail

I really cannot think what the problem could be?

Wordpress is just not loading at all. You can see that by visiting http://www.wsoreview.net/

    Thanks for the help man!

Another thing to note is I tried viewing any error logs by adding this to index.php:

    ini_set("display_errors", 1);
    ERROR_REPORTING(E_ALL);

However, the page still doesn't load anything at all? As if not change has been made.

I'm thinking there's something 'disconnected' somewhere?!

Thanks guys. I think I got that coevered though it's just my bad use of words. I don't think my site is in 'root' as such, I've just moved it to my main directory for this project (/wsoreview/)... but the domain is still pointing to /wsoreview/wordpressnew/ so I guess it shouldn't matter?

Can anyone spot any errors here I am making?

I'm sure it's probably a silly mistake I am making.

Interesting to note I am not getting a 404 error though just not page load? What can we take away from this?

so is the domain hitting the root or the sub?

download a copy of index.php from your wordpress install, then delete it,

now goto the link and see if it gives directory listings.

if it does, you need to either edit your wp-options table to change your link or your wp-condig file.

    It's hitting the subdomain... namely ---> /wsoreview/wordpressneww/

Hey Evan thanks for the response! I deleted index.php (backed it up), I'm now getting this error:

    Error 403 - Forbidden

You tried to access a document for which you don't have privileges.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

To be honest this isn't making a lot of sense. You say you have moved your wordpress installation to the root yet your files are in 'wordpressnew'? If your wordpress installation is in the 'root' then whatever domain you are using will automatically show your wordpress cms. Where are the files for this wordpress installation residing - root or not (root being a similar directory setup to your 'wordpressnew' directory yet showing on opening up the initial domain directory).

    Are you using multiple domains?

    Hey Mkj.

Sorry, my wordpress installation is not in root. It is in /wordpressnew which is a sub directory off /wsoreview/

My 1&1 panel shows exactly this:

    Domain name :wsoreview.net
Status : The domain is now ready.
    Document root :/homepages/35/d325471604
    Domain is :Included domain(External domain)

    Destination :Home directory
    /wsoreview/wordpressnew

Does this answer what you asked? Sorry if I miss-interpreted it..

Basically I miss used the term 'root', what I mean was I just moved around the folder structure of my hosting, my wordpress installation used to be like this:

    /wsoreview/joomla/wordpressnew

However, now it is like this and showing a blank screen:

    /wsoreview/wordpressnew

Both times my 1&1 account was pointing the domain to the /wordpressnew/ directory.

Eh where are your files for your wordpress installaion? Are they in the root or in the 'wordpressnew' directory?

Sorry been a long day. It appears your files are in 'wordpressnew'. All a bit confusing.

My experience with blank home page.

Sometimes when you are migrating your page you can get blank home page.

I found the problem with the home page not displaying from the base URL. it was because there was a default.html file in the root directory. The old hosting server must had set the order to look for start files to PHP extension as the first default so it ignored the default.html file in the root directory and loaded index.php.

The new hosting server must have the default extension it looks for as an .HTM or .HTML file and was loading the blank default.html file first. Once I deleted the blank default.html file the hosting server started loading the index.php file and displayed the WordPress home page.

  • You should contact your host and have them fix it for you. It's what they're payed to do.
