    Hi

Depends what your websites function is but:

Use CSS layout rather than table layout
    Use H1 tags (and H2)
Easy to follow navigation in a silo format (so related categories in their own folder
    Keep it simple
    Strong call to action

    Hope this helps
    :-)

There are some good tips here, I would add:

        1. Since search engine crawlers can't "see" images, make it easy for them to "understand" what an image is about. When using images, use meaningful ALT descriptions. The image file names can contain key words, for example, instead of saying a.jpg, adwords-income.jpg or something like that would be better.

        2. Minimize the tricky javascript menus esp. that get generated on the fly. Stick to simple, have a look at useit.com: Jakob Nielsen on Usability and Web Design to get an idea on what's a usable site.

        3. I'm not sure if you are thinking about accessibility but you may want to keep that in mind for users who have special needs. See W3C guide on how to design accessible sites: WAI Resources on Introducing Web Accessibility

        4. when naming hyper links, user meaningful descriptions. Instead of click here use your keyword or something that conveys the idea behind the hyper link.

        5. Test your application for cross browser compatibility. See Wikipedia article on cross browser: Cross-browser - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

        6. Have a consistent look and feel throughout your web site pages. If you have a common header and footer, this should be available on all pages so use can jump back to any page he/she wants.

        7. Provide a site map so user can see what's available on the site.

        Hope it helps.

First of all you should think of the curent webdesign trends, what people want to see. After you have the design you should think of the curent website trends too, add ajax, use css etc . Read some website magazines and look at the css site directories to get inspired.

    Best Regards,

I'll add this one to the list. Your site must be user-friendly and your design should be consistent throughout.

Also, if at all possible, keep the use of images to a minimum.

      That's my 2 cents.

      Thanks,

      Leron

my best advice to you is this: design your site for your target market, and good content is more important than a flashy-looking site with no substance

Check this before uploading your website.
Website is the hosting of domain name such as Yahoo.com, Alamkin.net, Google.com, Etrainingbiz.info, etc. Your website is your office, location and contact on the Internet. Therefore, it has to be properly designed for you to retain your visitors and make them introduce others to your site.
There are many factors to be considered while designing a site.
    (A) Choosing a Domain Name.

Your domain name can spell your success on the Internet. A good domain name is the best asset you can ever have. It can make your business stand out in the crowd. For the name you give to your website has much to say about you for examples Books.com and furniture.com are self explanatory. Any visitor to these sites has actually known what he is likely to see. The domain name should be short. The domain name should be simple. It should be suggestive of your business category. It should be easy to interpret and pronounce. It should not be difficult to spell. It should not be difficult to remember.

    (B) Making Your Website Attractive, Interesting and Engaging.

To succeed at your online business (whether you are selling your own product/service or are selling for other merchants as an affiliate), You need a website created just for that. It should be a simple and focused site. Your website should be easy to build, maintenance-free, low cost, credible and a powerful traffic-builder and customer-converter.
© Your Website Should Be Easy To Read.
You should choose your text and background colors very carefully. You don't want to use backgrounds that obscure your text or use colors that are hard to read. Dark-colored text on a light-colored background is easier to read than light-colored text on a dark-colored background. You also don't want to set your text size too small (hard to read) or too large (it will appear to shout at your visitors. Your visitors should be comfortable with what they are reading.
    (D) Speed of Page Loading
Pay attention to images to ensure they are properly optimised and do not excessively delay load time. It may also mean breaking up long articles and ensuring that important content is at the top of the page where it will load first.
    (E) Navigation
The aim of a website's navigation is simply to allow users to get to the content they require. For sites that have a large number of sections and web pages. The navigation plan has to be properly researched and designed. You have to consider different types of visitors and simulate the most common steps they would take to find what they want on your site.
    (F) There Should Be A Clear Link To Your Contact Page.

You should give relevant contact information (physical address, telephone numbers, fax numbers, and email address), to create a sense of security for your end users. They can contact you in the way that makes them feel the most comfortable. They may need answers to questions that are not readily available on your web site.

    (G) Good Content.
A site with good content, regardless of its subject, is one that provides products or information that is useful or beneficial to users. A good site will make it clear what information or content is available. Your website content should convince visitors that your service is either unique or superior to that of your competitors in terms of quality and price. It should show your potential clients that you could provide the solution they are seeking. Your product or service will solve their problems, answer a dream, enrich their lives, and/or improve their businesses. You are the dependable expert that they want and need!

    (H) Layout And Design Should Be Consistent Throughout The Website.

Consistencies in any document, whether it is a set of web pages or a report, project a professional image.Typefaces and background colors, too, should remain the same throughout your site.

Easy intuitive navigation and clear and readable content are one of the main aspects you need to take care of even before starting the design.

Make sure you lay out the navigation in a way that all your menu and submenu items fit on the first part of the page and can be seen clearly without having to scroll down. This is part of laying out your design and creating the 'layout' in the first place.

Then you can go on to design effects, choose colors header etc...
