Wordpress home page not found

Hi

I setup a new website recently and installed wordpress. For some reason I have to make a post in order for my home page to show up, if I delete my post the home page will show as not found.

I don't want to have a post because there is a "date" in my website home page which doesn't look professional. How can I make a home page instead? But I still want to keep the root directory. ie. http://mysite is my home page but not http://mysite/home
