Important! Important! Hard Drive overload

Hi, I keep getting this email from HostGator for about the past week. I actually asked this somewhere else about 12 hours ago and no one knows or maybe just hasn't responded but it scares the hell out of me because I don't know much about servers so I don't know the problems that could follow if any.

This started right after I gave someone else my login info to my hosting account is what's strange. This person has worked for me off and on over the past 2 years developing sites so I presumed He could be trusted. He's currently working on a $800 project for me is why I gave it to him. I'm not saying he's doing anything but just letting you know the only thing that's changed is that.

Can anyone tell me what would be causing this? I keep getting these emails. I contacted HostGator last Friday about another email with the same issue but after staying on the phone for about 30 minutes he told me everythings fine and not to worry. I have 2 drivers 500 gigs each.


Drive Critical: /dev/sda3 (/var/named/chroot/var/run/dbus) is 94% full

ALSO getting this one every night around 2am EST
IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email.

The hostname (hexl.hexl.com) resolves to 173.193.XX.XX. It should
resolve to 173.193.**.**. Please be sure to correct /etc/hosts as
well as the 'A' entry in zone file for the domain.

Some are all of these problems can be caused by /etc/resolv.conf
being setup incorrectly. Please check this file if you believe
everything else is correct.

You may be able to automatically correct this problem by using the
'Add an A entry for your hostname' option under 'Dns Functions' in
your Web Host Manager.

  • The short answer is that an account is using up too much disk space. If you have multiple users, identify which user account is taking up the majority of this space.

    Here's a link that explains this issue and how to review the log and even delete some temp files.

    All this means is that you need to add an A entry to your DNS zone for your IP address. It's easy to do, and sometimes HostGator will even do it for you if you ask nicely or get the right representative assisting you.

    None of these are anything shady. It could just be that one of the user accounts has a large database / script that is causing excessive use of disk space. Once identified, you can address it. But no reason to lose faith in your developer.

    The first problem means the hard drive on your server is full. Full as in, you can't put much more on it. Either delete stuff, or talk to you hosting company about giving your more space.

    The second problem is an automated email from WHM saying your resolver configuration is messed up. Go into WHM, click on Basic Setup and verify the hostname is set to resolve to the correct IP. Then clicked on "Edit DNS Zone", select the domain, and verify the domain is resolving to the correct IP address. Then connect via SSH and open the /etc/hosts file and verify everything looks fine there.

    If you keep getting the error message, talk to your hosting company. Some companies like mine provide managed support for VPS servers, which I'm assuming you are on.

    • That is a hell of a lot of space to fill up!

      Is there a cache system or systems being used? In some cases it / they can fill up too much if you get too much traffic. It / they might well be emptying when the drives are nearly full and not before. If your drives were full to 94% a while ago then presumeably they will be even more full by now which would result in your site grinding to a halt.

      What type of files does your site handle? Is it a download site or video site or something?
