An important information for the new comers in SEO field.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In online marketing a landing page, sometimes known as a lead capture page, is a single web page that appears in response to clicking on an advertisement. The landing page will usually display directed sales copy that is a logical extension of the advertisement or link. Landing pages are often linked to from social media, email campaigns or pay per click (PPC) campaigns in order to enhance the effectiveness of the advertisements. The general goal of a landing page is to convert site visitors into sales leads.
By analyzing activity generated by the linked URL, marketers can use click-through rates and Conversion rate to determine the success of an advertisement.

It is designed specifically as a sales page (page, not pages) that a visitor will 'land on' after clicking on an ad. It's sole purpose is to convert the visitor into a buyer.

As the OP stated, it is also very useful in determining successful (and unsuccessful) advertising campaigns.

Although the landing page usually is the sales page after clicking a link or advertisement, it is not limited to only being a sales page. It could be the home page or any other page of the site, sales pages are just the most common.

A landing page sole purpose should always be to capture leads into your sales funnel and create a relationship with them.

So as Bradley J Anderson mentioned, its to turn customers into buyers at some point in your sales funnel

    In simple terms...

A landing page is a web page you send traffic to and is designed to get the visitor to take a certain action. When the visitor takes that action, it's called a conversion.

The conversion can be anything. Buy a product, join a mailing list, click on a link... any action you want them to take. That 'conversion' is the whole point of the landing page.

Use multiple landing pages (or multiple versions of the same landing page) to split test and multiple versions based on the traffic source.

A landing page is a website page that allows you to capture a visitor's information through a lead form. A good landing page will be targeted to a particular stream of traffic - say from an email campaign advertising a particular whitepaper - and, because it is targeted, and because it has an interesting offer behind a lead capture form, you will convert a higher percentage of your website visitors into leads with which you can follow up.
