Hey guys I'm trying to learn how to make websites myself..and I have bought a domain and webhosting and installed a wordpress theme

Here's a look at the site currently:
www.howtogainweight.us

From a guide that got me into this it said go on a FTP program and upload icons and pictures to it and put them on your site but it was kind of confusing.

I also want to get into editing the theme via "editor" can anyone lead me to a guide that goes over the coding completly from beginner>expert.

I would outsource the website creation but im 16 and dont have much money to use for that because i'm saving the rest for article writing/SEO

Thanks guys!

You can download a free FTP program called FileZilla here:

FileZilla - Client Download (no affil.)

This will allow you to send files back and forth from your
computer to your server (at Hostgator).

You'll need to get your ftp username, password.

You can edit the files with a free HTML editor such as
      Kompozer:

      KompoZer - downloads (no affil.)

If you go to YouTube, you'll find plenty of free video
tutorials on the basics of WordPress and also how to
      use FileZilla and Kompozer.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

You can get a complete (and free) education on how to manipulate WP code on YouTube or if you have it, podcasts on iTunes. If you have hosting, and i'm assuming you do, you don't need to use FTP for anything. That can all be accomplished from the admin panel of your WP site page, likely found at www.howtogainweight.us/wp-admin

Yep, go to that url and put in the username and password you chose when you loaded WP on your domain.

Maybe you can hope someone comes up with a cheap WSO on this in time to help you out, but I doubt it would be free.

Otherwise, I'm afraid there's no such thing. You're just going to have to dig through the internet to find the information you need, just like the rest of us. I suggest you start at Wordpress.org.

  • Every theme is different, so you would have to look at your theme's documentation for editing info, but the best place to start for anything Wordpress is with the people who made it:

    Main Page « WordPress Codex

That's where you will find the most accurate and up-to-date information.

A word of advice regarding the online editor in WP: Never use it. Sometimes it adds things and does strange things to the code. Get yourself Notepad++ and copy and paste your code into there to work with it.

Shaun gave you the link for the Filezilla FTP proggy above, which it seems most people here use but I personally can't stand. I use Bulletproof FTP, myself, but that's just a matter of opinion.

Uploading pics is generally done through the theme's dashboard.

One other thing: You'll probably get more and better answers if you post your questions in this thread, instead:

Hi, I know your pain. I'm in the same place. I have found that the customer service department is very helpful. I was teaching myself to ftp and just did get what it was asking me to do, and could not find a video to help much. Just made me more confused, because I was looking for something that was not covered in the video. Called customer service and they got me sorted out.

      Good luck.

        Hi

You don't need to upload your images by FTP. That is something you can master once you get the hang of Wordpress.

You can upload the images very easily via Media. I have put some screenshots together for you in a Word document. Hopefully this explains it simply.

        Good luck.

You don't need money to get educated on WordPress: you need time, drive and Google/Youtube:

I would take some of your article writing/SEO money and buy a theme that has built in design features, great tutorials and forums and built in SEO like Studio Press or Thesis. Then you can do the rest of the SEO work yourself.
