What hosting site is the best hosting site? One that offers the most services for the least price?

What hosting site is the best hosting site that offers the least price?

Maybe these will be the one and the same.

  • I'm partial to HostGator...started my first sites with them and have overall had a positive experience except for a few small issues. I now have Reseller and VPS hosting packages and it's been pretty smooth. Pricing is competitive...I think you should avoid the bargain basement prices for hosting personally. You get what you pay for and it comes in the form of downtime and poor customer service and support.

Also have had good luck with Hostmonster, which is basically the same as BlueHost. Let's see what others recommend...

I've used BlueHost for several years and love them. Their prices are competitive and their support is awesome.

I'd say HostGator has the best web hosting. Their prices are a bit higher then some other hosts but their reliability is worth it to me.

    My hosting experiences:

2mHost - support from Egypt was about what you'd expect from $3/mo - booted them over 9 years ago.

DreamHost - Everything about the site was slow. It didn't go down much, but MAN was it slow! I got off of them a long time ago, but continued hosting my mother's sites (switched the account to her credit card) for another year or two until she gave up on them maybe 2 or 3 years ago?

BlueHost - The service was fantastic until there was a hardware problem on a router my server was attached to. My site would go down 6 to 8 times per day for 10 to 50 minutes at a time - the router restarted itself once an hour and things would work. I basically had to babysit my site and then call support to have them restart the router any time the site went down, and it never got fixed despite promises. The 2 years leading up to that were great, though, and I haven't heard anybody else complain about them, but I wouldn't go back.

1&1 - I never actually hosted anything with them. I signed up, discovered that their control panel couldn't do a very simple thing that all other hosts could (import a mid size database - not even an especially large one) and then had problems with their customer service and invoicing department so I have nothing good to say about them.

Midphase - I was very happy with them and until earlier this year I still had sites with them. Actually, they were with ANHosting, which is the same company just under a different name and different packages available. The site occasionally went down for a short time, but never for long and that's to be expected with a shared hosting account. Speed was all right, but not fast.

Media Temple - I've been very happy with them as well and have never had any trouble with them whatsoever - then again, I haven't put my highest trafficked sites on their service yet. All of my experiences to date have been good though and I do have a few sites with them at the moment.

Rackspace - Very expensive, but very fast. I use them for the company I work for (none of my own business.) About 95% of the time their service is wonderful, but our server hardware has died twice in one year which involved some pretty painful time getting back up and running. And when 90% of your ecommerce business flows through there, that can be painful. We were hosting our email and our webserver on the same server, though, so now that email has been outsourced to Google things have become much more reliable. We pay over $1000/mo for this server, though, so it's probably out of the budget of most people. I think their cheapest offerings are in the $250-$300/month range, but I haven't seen the numbers for 3 or 4 years so I imagine that's gone up since then. Customer and technical support is excellent with Rackspace, probably the best for any hosting company I've used to date.

HostGator - My current favorite host. I have a reseller account with them, and just create a new CPanel for each new project rather than putting new sites onto existing hosting accounts. That way when I want to sell the site, I can just hand over a username and password and don't have to worry about moving files on or off and messing with DNS. I can let the new owner handle all of that. I can also charge them $20 or $30 per month to continue hosting with me. Moving my main site to them sped it up quite a bit from when it was at MidPhase, and I haven't had any reliability issues yet (about a year, so not enough time for a definitive opinion there.) When I've needed to use customer or technical support they've been fast and effective. The only better experience I have is with Rackspace.

I've used a few other companies here and there over the past decade, usually for 1 off small projects, but none that I ever stuck with for more than a month or two and I can't really offer any opinions, especially as a couple of them have gone out of business and HostGator has been treating me really well.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I learned a lot. This gives me better information so I can check into it more.

One last question. Do any of these offer website design for free?

    Thanks Again!

There are website builders (with tutorials) included with your web hosting as well as many easy one click installs of things like wordpress, drupal, joomla, etc that have free templates you can use. But you won't find a web hosting company that will have an actual web designer create your website for your for free if that's what you were asking. Best of luck to you!
