Trying to set up a wordpress website with 1and1 - there doesn't appear to be any easy, automated setup like other hosts are offering.

Been looking around for solutions - I think I understand that i need to upload the wordpress files using an FTP client, then install it in a MySQL database.

i'm a complete newbie to web design, code etc so is this too complex for me to manage, or will I be able to run the site once its installed on the datebase, or would it be wiser to just switch to another host?

Any help is much appreiciated

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

Sorry if I am wrong, but my guess is that you didn't bother to acquaint yourself with WordPress. There is plenty of stuff on WordPress.org. Go and read them. If you want a quick solution, hire someone from any forum, website or Fiverr.

PS: If you want to have a custom theme or functions, you will probably need help for web design, code, etc.

I would switch to another host (they are notoriously not the best...) but that would not stop me from learning how to do things (like WP installation) manually.

Any hosts you would recommend? Also, how important is it to have hosting in your country in terms of getting search ratings?

The more I look into it, the more confident I feel about doing the manual install - I was initially put off by a post from someone else new to web design who said the 'five minute install' took them two weeks. I take it running the website is the same regardless of how you install it?

Don't really have any recommendation. Many warriors use hostgator...
It depends on what's your goal with the site/blog. If you target visitors from your own country only... then it may be beneficial, together with a country extension of your domain. Otherwise it doesn't matter.

Yes, running it is the same.

Well, those with the 2 weeks install must be idiots... sorry.
The longest "task" when installing is waiting until the FTP transfers the files from my computer to the server host. In the meantime you can create the database. Then edit the 4 lines in the wp-config. Upload and run the install: a few seconds. That's it.

I would love to help you with your WP Blog. I can teach you how to install WP, plus how to install a cloned blog to make it easier to get your blog up and running as quickly as possible.

PM Me on here and I will get back with you.

I would also suggest a new hosting company that uses cpanel. Most hosting companies with Cpanel have a 1 click install for WordPress which will create the MySql database at the same time. Very simple to use.

      What's a cloned blog?

Yeah, right. I will give you ftp access only, no access to database... will you be able to install it?
