  • One page should have just on H1 tag. It's like a king or the top position. You cannot have multiple kings or it will result in chaos. Right!

    • Ok, since no one here can explain this any better, lol. here goes the break down of Heading Tags, which is what this is, a HEADING TAG!!! Not a "make cool titles and big text all over your pages tag!" So here goes!

      1) H1 is the most important bit of text in the entire site! it is normally used only one time

      2) h2 tags are the second most important items on a page, This will be titles of pages or even the title of your main point article.

      3) h3 tags are used throughout your site to show the browser, search engine and your reader that these are the titles of your articles, paragraphs or bodies of text, they are used the most in a site always!!!

      4) h4, h5 and h6 tags are usually used in widget sidebar titles or used as typography through out your site to indicate titles of lesser important text.

      Now to clarify the point,

Yes the browser and the search engines use H1, h2 and h3 tags to determine quality of your site and the importance of the content its reading in relationship to the relevancy of your content. So yes they do count!! Anyone who disagrees, lets see you go ahead and throw a bunch of h1 tags around your site, I dare you. Post the link here and leave it that way for 90 days. I bet ya wont. And if you do, your page rank will drop, drop, drop....I promise

  • It is a good idea to use one per page. The risk is that you cause confusion under the important heading of consistent relevance - ie if two h1 tags give the search engine spiders conflicting information about the page.

  • you can have as many as you like but you should have only one on each page
  • 2-3 is best in my opinion, not to say 1 is bad. Think less numbers, more... what are you really trying to say? Hopefully you don't have 10 big points on your page, and if you do, consider breaking it up in to several pages.
  • The idea that it's an absolute rule there can only be a single H1 tag per page is a myth. There is actually nothing to prevent the use of multiple H1 tags if the situation calls for it. The answer is "It depends".

Heading tags are like markers that create an outline of your page. For example:
    • Heading 1
      • Heading 2
        • Heading 3
        • Heading 3
          • Heading 4
      • Heading 2
      • Heading 2
        • Heading 3

If there is a single headline on your page that is the most important, it should have an H1 tag applied to it accordingly. For example, on a page that holds one article the title should have H1 tags on it.

The same thing goes for H2 tags, i.e. they should be applied to any headlines of a secondary level of importance. So on a single article this might apply to a subtitle for example.

And from there H3, H4 tags and so on would apply to any headlines at the next level of importance in your "outline".

But what if you have a page where there is no single headline that stands out as being the most important? For example, a page that shows the intros of a series of articles with their titles displayed, but that has no other headline?

In this case all the article titles become the most important headlines on the page. And because there are multiple headlines of equal top level importance, the appropriate thing to do is apply H1 tags to all of them.

But all that said, the most important factor for good rankings is just good content and plenty of it. You could never lift a finger to optimize for search engines, and you have plenty of great content you'll still outrank perfectly SEO'd rubbish.

So do your SEO, but remember to put quality up there as your top priority.
  • I used a lot <h1> on my website which can improve searching engine ranking according to web design book.
  • Using H1 tag once in a page in good practice and it should be title of that page and title will be your Targeting Keywords for that page.
Suppose, you used H1 tag two times so search engine crawler will confuse which one should give most priority. If you use H1 tag once then Search Engine crawler index H1 text and It helps the SREP of the page.

    • Hi,
I,m a little confused,i use H1 tags but in wordpress, when i look in the page then i see 2 times H1 .One as entry title is it better that i make the second H1 to H2.

      Is this good or wrong.

      h1 class="entry-title">Goedkope Babykamers</h1> </div> <div class="format_text entry-content">
      <h1>Aanbiedingen en Goedkope Babykamers.</h1>

      <h2>Vinden van goedkope babykamers</h2>
      Thanks

      Sorry for bad English
  • I'm used to using H1 every page with different title indeed...so it'll be optimize every page as well.

    need advice if I'm wrong
  • Multiple H1 tags are OK if you use HTML 5 only.

  • Hello
In my opinion there should be only one h1 as the main title of the page
  • You can use multiple H1 tags for sure, if you want to dilute the effect of the H1 tag at some point, use ccs for this. USe will see the diluted effect of the H1 and search engine will still consider that as H1
  • Having more than one h1 tag on a page is fine. Just don't over do it.

  • You can use multiple h1 tags, but this is bad for on page optimization.

H1 tag should be your page title and nothing more. All other titles and headlines should be h2, h3 and etc.

You should edit your wordpress theme to show the proper h tags when listing the posts and when viewing the post it self.
  • Using multiple H1 tags shouldn't have any significant effects on SEO efforts. Because HTML5 uses powerful sectioning elements, it's quite common to see H1s used for each section of a page.

However headings are also used to show hierarchy, and most pages will have one clear heading that takes precedence. There are exceptions - such as blogs.

So using multiple H1s is fine, and it's not a major SEO issue (unless they're stuffed with keywords), but most of the time it's unnecessary.
  • The bold ones are the keywords! Unless you are fluent in HTML5 and you know how to use the section tags... don't do it.

P.S. Tom, usually posts digging up a year old thread get deleted. So, don't be surprised...
