Hello,

I am going to build an ecommerce site and am wondering what would be the best platform. I am currently running a ecommerce site on wordpress but am not that pleased with it. Looking for something that is a little easier to customize and has good support. Maybe drag and drop too. Would also prefer something that is a onetime fee and not monthly but am open to the best solution.

been looking at magento commerce, 3cart, americommerce and a few others.

If you like wordpress and want to continue using it I would recommend using shopperpress theme. There are quite a few nice, easy to use ecommerce plugins and themes for wordpress

I would add to this:

-import/export capabilities
-newsletter list management
-CRM compatibility
-quickbooks compatibility

all in all, great e-commerce means code and interface customization. Not all products are created equal.. so, find the e-com solution that best showcases and of course ranks your produdcts

Several options are open to you. Magento. VirtueMart. Zen Cart. Drupal. Choosing among these what suits your work best is the important factor. All these e-commerce website platforms are open source, user friendly and free. They come with a lot of interesting features and are greatly flexible.

Do keep in mind Magento will require some time to learn but once you figure it out, you will realize how powerful it is. A lot of our clients use Magento for setting up their eCommerce website.

Its been really good and effective also much more easy and reliable.
Personally I consider Magento to be the best shopping cart software for E-commerce websites

There are several other things to consider, security being a major factor. Are you going to accept credit cards? Be familiar with PCI compliance standards. https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/
What information are you going to keep on-site? It is against most merchant accounts to store credit card numbers. Something you do not want to do.
How many products are you going to have? If only a few then most any shopping cart will suffice. If it is a large number then you will need sufficient storage and processing power since some of these systems are resource hogs.
Most systems have trials, if not free. Set up a development server and test them until you find one you like.
Research for any security flaws and hacks for any system you have your eye on. Hacking seems to be running rampant now days, so having a secure system is a must. When you do set up your system be absolutely sure to lock down your server or hire someone to do this. There are many scripts that look for vulnerabilities in these shopping carts and you will get tested on a daily basis.

Magento is the best one with the most features out of the box. That's what we use for our clients.

However Ecwid has a nice drag and drop feature. It depends on what your needs and budget is. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hello everyone,

I am wondering what are the best eCommerce solutions?

I am using wordpress shopperpress at the moment and absolutely hate it, its extremely slow, bugs out alot and is just a general pain in the a**.

I would like to use something else but there seem to be so many different options out there, I would really like to see what solutions other people are using.

I don't have any coding skill so would like something thats drag n drop. Would also like something thats flexible too tho, maybe with themes like wordpress? or is easy to change the layout with.

There are quite some good ones in the market but which platform to choose depends on your needs.
Wordpress ecommerce plugins are one time pay if you select a paid plugin...free ones are not so good. Magento is a good one but its complicated and costly. Joomla virtuemart is again very complicated and bulky. You can try shopify which is good but its premium.

Magento is good but very resource hungry, I have heard of people with large shops having to get dedicated servers to cope with it, but this is just here-say so probably a little exaggerated!

Couple of good plugins for Wordpress are Cart66 (used to be PHPurchase) and you could even use Wordpress Simple Paypal Shopping Cart which is a free plugin but you would be adding the items as posts and adding the button only with that.

I have a bunch of ecommerce sites and I tend to still go back to a modified version of osCommerce, but if you have no programming skills then modification to make it look less like the standard install would be tricky, but as far as function it does everything you need it to and isn't too much of a hog on the resources.

But then again, I've been a web developer for more than 10 years and modifying PHP and CSS is like microwaving popcorn to me.

I use Magento and you are correct, it is very resource hungry. The problem with open source Magento is that there is ALOT of features built into the core code. Most of these features you will never use but they add tremendously to your computing overhead - end result is it will make your site sluggish, especially if you have a lot of products. We actually have a dedicated server to help with this issue but even then, site load times are a problem.

Other issues with Magento - Unless you have a good understanding of Magento code, you will require outside Magento expertise to fix bugs, add extensions, make site changes, conduct upgrades, etc. And I can tell you from experience, 99% of the so called Magento experts out there are not experts. When it comes to Magento, you get what you pay for with respect to IT support.

We are moving away from Magento to look at other options such as Shopify and BigCommerce. Yes, you pay a monthly fee but those monthly fees are far lower then what we currently pay to keep Magento running smoothly.

  We've used the other open source platforms for years, had nothing but problems with keeping them secure and updated. Installing different addons can become a nightmare if not tested properly. Then when you actually start to get a lot of traffic, you need your own server to run it all properly.

BigCommerce is going to be a completely hosted/tested/supported solution that you won't have to worry about WP type bugs with. Don't get me wrong, those other options are great for high-end customization and very specific functionality. But, for someone wanting templates, ease of use, and most likely a dedicated support team, a hosted cart like BC is probably a better option.

I'll second the vote for Big Commerce.

I found it easy to learn/use, easy to modify and customize (and if you have absolutely no knowledge, you can find someone to do it for you, cheaply - hey, you could hire me ).

I'm not gonna lie, I've had some issues with their customer service (it's not the BEST, but it's not the worst) and I've had support tickets through email get ignored, but when I called and spoke to a support ninja my problems were dealt with.

Honestly, it's got more features than you'll probably even need, and that's a good thing. I started out with WordPress Shopperpress as well and HATED it. It did nothing I wanted it to, was always buggy, was completely unprofessional (stupid emails, people would register for my site and get their password emailed about an hour later, etc.) so I went to Big Commerce.

I was able to get my shop completely to my liking really fast with pretty much any feature I could think of, plus some.

I've used Magento, Shopplugin for WordPress and regular old PayPal buttons.

Bottom line is, use a platform which will suit your needs and what you are selling. If you're going with a platform just because it has features 1 - 10 but you'll only use features 1 - 5 then you're wasting your time. Go with the platform which will benefit your present and relevant needs the most.

  Just would like to clarify this point. LiteCommerce v2.2 was a commercial cart sold at $109.

I like donald's list. However, I would like to add more to it.

There's also nopCommerce for people who want to develop on asp.net.

I personally prefer open sources. Paid ones may not be that worthwhile considering that open sources have many plugins already available which can make them as powerful or as feature-rich as paid ones.

I think Joomla and Magento will be the best if you are going to build eCommerce website. WordPress is also great and popular CMS, but it is good for blog building. Joomla has eCommerce extentions, as example you can use the most popular VirtueMart component. Magento aslo has a lot of eCommecre extensions.

You may have just had a bad experience with wordpress - make sure you check some of the ecommerce themes at themeforest.net. Otherwise shopify is great if you change your mind about a monthly fee

The answer to the question is more complex than the anecdote based claims most of us make. There are many ecommerce products out there, and I am not going to make snap claims that one is best. Many are good, a few are not.

Magento gets a big mention, and I agree that it is a good product. It has limitations - but they are quite possibility not relevant.

The first thing you need to establish to choose a system for your ecommerce is exactly what you are hoping to achieve. What are your products. How do you wish to display them. What customer functionality and searches do you wish to include. What back office tools to you need. How will you do your inventory control. What reporting are you looking for. Will you want/need integration with other software, such as an accounts package.

Without a detailed specification, it is unwise to make claims as to which is best.

However, there is good news! Many of the products mentioned above are actually, when you have become conversant with them, pretty versatile!

Really don't know why you want to change Wordpress to another platform, but I can recommend you joomla. Joomla has a lot of ecommerce plugins, especially you should check virtuemart.

The best platform that I have used is by far Magento.

It is strictly for eCommerce, like OSCommerce, but I feel that it's just a 'big kid' ecommerce platform. Better features, faster and more versatile IMO.

I will recommend Meganto, if you have a big enterprise and need to process all sales online. Unless we have our own secure and easy-to-use CMS for small and Mid-sized business. Our CMS is very easy to customize and website take a few time to load.

Hi I want to create a blog with a ecommerce site for weight loss products and programs. I want to drive traffic to my site from mostly video uploaded to youtube etc. if I use optimized press for the squeeze pages. will this look strange if it does not blend into the main ecommerce theme of another wordpress theme. Do you know of good example where this has been used out there? i thought I could try to create a squeeze for almost all the videos i upload. then get there details at least before they browse the ecommerce site. Also what is the best theme to use thanks everyone

have alook at bigcommerce.com this is a good platform and easier to produce a site if you do not want to do any programming. magento is also good, take a look at the hosted platform form magento called magento go

I've used Finest Shops. They have really good customer support. However, there is a bit of a learning curve to understand their platform. Once you grasp it, you can come out with a really simple and easy to use ecomm site.

Yes, magento is good platform for eCommerce. But WordPress also is a good customizable platform..

WordPress in my opinion cannot provide a selling platform as robust as Magento, so my vote is for Magento!
