run with. I currently use blogger as a host for my blog. but I'm now
in the process of creating my own .com website. I was all set to use
Wordpress but I'm wondering if I should use Joomla? all opinions
welcomed thanks and best regards Wiz

  • If you are new to creating websites and/or don't have enough technical know-how, WordPress is the best option for you. It's simple and easy to use. Help is readily available and you can customize it for almost any kind of websites--corporate, personal, blogs, stores, etc.

    • Wordpress is the way to go its extremely easy to use and allows you to use plug ins and can be built in a matter of minutes.
    • I have another question actually. I've been using wordpress for a while now. Suddenly 2 days ago some slipped in some links to Western Union.
How does this happen and what should I do to protect my sites going forward?

      Thank you
      Brenda

  • Hands down, WordPress is the way to go.
There are many reasons, but I'll give you three to keep it simple:
    • Ease of use
    • Availability of plugins and Warrior associated content
    • Security

    • Thanks for the replies gentlemen, I've been using blogger for so long that its time to finally upgrade I have the domain and host and was set to use wordpress but from reading some of the reviews on Joomla its seems like you can do alot more. but we'll see thanks again.
  • If you are looking to build a blog then stick to Wordpress. Wordpress is the best solution for that. Joomla is better for more complex sites.
  • set up a couple of test directories and play around with both. I believe you will find WP to be quite a bit simpler.
  • Both are quite good actually, perhaps you could follow Ken's advice and test them out for some days?
  • Here's why we use WordPress:

  • If in doubt, just use WordPress. Joomla is an excellent platform however it only really shines if there is something specific you want to do that it can handle for you.

So if you're not sure, this probably means you don't have a specific need, which in turn means your life is going to be a whole lot easier if you run with WordPress.
  • I agree with everyone. Since you're purpose if for blogging, Wordpress will suite well. If you will need certain customizations and changes, it will really be easy since there are a ton of individuals who offer help via their site. Not to mention Warriors too!
  • Yah, Wordpress, if you don;t have knowledge in php or web developing generaly.

    • I often tell people that the choice of CMS is dependent on the need.

I explain to them that WordPress is like a Ford F-250 pick up truck and that Joomla is like a Mac Truck.

If you're building a large site with many bells & whistles leaning on the heavy side of development, then you need a Mac Truck for the job. It's easy. Choose Joomla.

However, if the job is smaller than previously described, but you still need a heavy duty piece of equipment, then you only need the F-250 pick up truck, thus choose Wordpress.

Both are great. Both are powerful. But only use the size of tool needed for the job.
  • Its simple... if you are going to create a community based website go for joomla.. if you want to have a blog with less than 10 authors stick to word press.WordPress takes little time to get started.
  • I think that Joomla is actually just as user friendly as Wordpress, you just have to get used to the menus and editing is a piece of cake.

Whoever likened Joomla to a Mack Truck is correct. If you're going to build a website that you hope to expand some day then why not start off with Joomla, it will make customizations down the road so much easier. Plus there are a ton of free plugins for it that will pretty much do whatever you want out of the box. Wordpress is only good for the absolute beginner but there are just too many limitations that I wouldn't recommend it either way.

    • I can't agree with that at all. I've built some very feature-heavy sites on WordPress without problems. What limitations have you run into?

  • I recently built a website and I tried to use Joomla, but found I did not have enough technical background to get it done easily WP was quite simple templates abound. Plugins are easy to find with tutorials.

I still intend to learn Joomla but, for now it is all WordPress for me.

    • What are you doing on your site? If we don't know the goal, then its kind of hard to say. But if you have been using blogger, wordpress will be a smooth transition. So easy to use, customize, and like everyone is saying is the best platform and community. Unless you are really technical (which im guessing not if you are using blogger) Then I would stick with WP, that is what I use and I love it. Granted I'm still learning it, but overall the ease of use is pretty good even for newbies.
  • i will suggest wordpress because of many SEO options present and its easy to use
    i also looks good
  • Joomla is super powerful. I still like wordpress for it's ability to just do anything quickly. wordpress is so easy
  • Wow, thank you for the feedback everyone. For those that might be wondering I run a Hiphop/eyecandy blogsite called The Wiz's Daily Dose thewizsdailydose.blogspot .com and right now it has a look of a blog site. I'm looking to do more then just blogging with wizsdailydose .com It has to have dynamic feel that will stand out from the rest of my peers. indexes, showcases, etc.. I want it to look like a website and not so much like a blog if that makes sense. I consider myself a mid level designer considering I've been shelter with blogger for solong I still good knowledge of HTML etc..
  • for what you want, you can still use Wordpress but you may want to try a news theme. That should give you the functionality you are looking for.
  • I use Joomla. HOnastely have never used Wordpress, I'm sure it's great too. Joomla isn't that difficult. You just need to study a bit of it and it gets easier every day
  • Easiest CMS for beginners is Wordpress and it comes with many free themes and plugins...

    Joomla for community driven sites

    Magento for Ecommerce

...if you plan on expanding in the future with new features then I would go with ModxCMS. I've tried them all and Modx is a fantastic CMS...Ajax features, full control over page designs (no template restrictions), internal SEO built in, etc.
  • I'm biased I'm afraid and would opt for wordpress every time. A while back when I didn't know much about either, I tried both but found I preferred wordpress. Partly due to the thousands of themes and plugins available both paid and free. But mainly because I liked the admin interface.
