Does anybody still use Internet Explorer?

I was just curious if any one still used Internet Explorer? Firefox and Chrome are vastly superior to it. I know personally that the only time I use IE is to download Firefox on a fresh install of Windows (Linux has Firefox by default. =])

24.9% of people still do as of May 2011 according to http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

Don't know why, probably just because they are familiar with it from a long time ago and don't change.

I think it is because it is included in Windows and there are people that are bnpot aware about other browsers.
Also in some companies like mine the standard is Microsoft.

Unfortunately, some people still do. I rejoiced when Google dropped support for older IE browsers early in 2010 - most of my clients decided to upgrade or to start learning how to use other more updated browsers.

As a designer, its a little frustrating to ensure older IE compatibility.

Hello Kim, precisely. I believe in this is as well :-) That is why we still do ensure compatibility with older IE browsers such as IE 6 below. Newer versions of IE work fine.

Kim and a couple of the other posters have it figured out.

My Google analytics has IE at over %70 much of the time. I like and use FF but have to give IE some consideration.

You may have different needs for your business.

Actually I think it's probably closer to 70% that still use I.E.

By far the majority of users are not tech savvy. Most don't know how to setup their email. If you do so Googling on the subject you will find some odd results. Typically they will put the numbers lower but then throw in a disclaimer of sorts indicating that for whatever reason their numbers don't take into account this or that.

I used to work in the I.T. support field and almost nobody uses FF or other browsers. Most use whatever is installed on the machine when they buy it.

This very true for non-technical users, some companies though are starting to install chrome as their default internet browser. I recent bought a Sony Vaio that had Chrome preinstalled.

It's odd to believe that some users, technical or not, don't attempt to find a better alternative to IE seeing how awful it is. (No offense to any IE fans)

Me either. I think it's a lot of anti-Microsoft nonsense. Childish. I also run FF because some arrogant website owners believe they should push their wishes onto the rest of us but to be honest I think it's inferior. In fact the newest version crashes more often than IE ever has for me. Almost daily. I laugh.

In all my years with over 5,000 visitors to my site every month for over 9 years a usage of FF of more than 20%.

At the end of the day both products (IE & FF) do what they say on the tin. They let you browse the web!

They both have add-ons/plug-ins available that are comparable so I guess it comes down to which you are used to and what you do with the browser.

For me, the Firebug plug-in for Firefox is an essential tool and it just works best under FF.

Having said the above - It's worth pointing out that FireFox has a terrible incompatibility with my graphics card drivers that makes small, text that is light on a dark background very hard to read. The characters kind of get a purpleish inteference pattern on them. It is a little like the old days of composite video connections when text would sometimes display chroma distortion.

If I view the same text in IE or Chrome then the problem is not there!

Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8 break a lot of the specifications set out by the W3 Standards. They also tend to be glitchy and buggy when it comes to doing certain Javascript things. Internet Explorer 9 is actually a pretty good browser, but will still be behind t he specifications of HTML5 and CSS3 when it goes release.

Internet Explorer still holds a 43%+ market share among internet users, according to Wikipedia's "Usage_share_of_web_browsers" article.

Unfortunately yes. Seeing how large your IE traffic in google analytics is a helpful indication of how important IE compatibleness is for your site, but usually it is around 20%-30%. Which also means 20%-30% of your visitors have no idea what they're doing with a computer.

I know the feeling.... so much of my traffic has a higher percentage of IE users than FF/Chrome... so the fight against the backwards non-compliant browser is forced to continue. So much for standards eh?

Developers hate Internet Explorer because it is a seemingly illiterate browser. Developers just want everyone to see their web site the same and since at least a quarter of internet users use IE, we have to continue to support it for our designs. I don't see how Microsoft doesn't have time to make a better browser. What is the problem? Do they really think IE is good at all?

For me, the font rendering in IE (and Chrome, Safari etc) is far superior but that is only because of a bug in FF. Or, rather, an incompatibility between the Dell Radeon HD5650 drivers and FF. I guess eventually either Dell will update the driver (you can't install the standard Catalyst ones) or FF will fix the issue.

However, for me, the Firefox addons are much better. Maybe that's just because I am used to them though

IE 9 is now good but others are designer enemy. But if mozilla or other browsers upgrades then IE will be commented by million and then it will upgrade to IE 10 after realizing its bugs, and at the same time other browsers will be in the next stage. This is what happening for IE, this is history :-)

Yeah, it's true. Firefox and chrome nowadays rule the world of browsers. The only reason IE is still having a little importance is that it comes with Windows.

But in my opinion, IE 9 is worth giving a try. I has changed a lot with trend.

It's worth remembering that if you are creating any kind of web content (such as squeeze pages etc...) then you really should test them on as many browsers as possible - A good start would be :

      Firefox
      IE
      Opera
      Safari
      Chrome

There are some really cool resources that will do it all for you actually. A cool one to try is Check Browser Compatibility, Cross Platform Browser Test - Browsershots It can take a while to process in the queue on a free account but it can handle a LOT of browsers!

Originally I hated FF. I just figured all the hype was mainly due to anti Microsoft sentiment among fringe dwelling (but surprisingly vocal) nerds but then I needed to do some cross browser checking so I need to install it (grumbling all the way). I have worked as a support technician since 1999 and have seen all the possible combinations of OS+Browser.

I have found that FireFox crashes by far many times than IE. It's slower to start and most of my chosen plugins don't work after the upgrades. I'm truly unimpressed and can't see what all the fuss is about. I'm online typically 12-15 hours a day and without doubt I'll get a FF crash every day but IE gives trouble maybe only a few times a month.

I know many of you hate Microsoft and many others are just following the herd and repeating old statements read somewhere online but seriously in my opinion IE is a better browser and I use both all day every day and have been for over 50,000 hours. I'd say that (apart from my experience) it's much of a muchness these days and really comes down to the user interface. Use which ever you like because I can't see a technical reason to use one over the other and if I did I would chose IE over FF because it crashes less.

Then again, I still use XP (which they will pry from my cold dead hands) so not sure if FF can't handle XP any more or what. I have IE8 (IE9 won't install on XP) and FF6.0.

Here's another tip that's browser related. When I switched from AVG to Avast I was surprised to gain at least a 30% speed increase across my entire computer (which was very surprising!) but I especially noticed that AVG REALLY puts the brakes on the browsers so if your machine is clunky and crashes a lot try removing AVG, installing Avast and I bet you will get a massive speed increase. In fact I might even mention this on the main forum.
