Poor text display in Firefox

I've just noticed that IE7 renders text far better than Firefox, especially italics. In IE7 I see super-sharp text including italics, which are often displayed raggedly. Looking at the same webpage in Firefox the text display quality is noticeably inferior.

Is this true across different platforms or is it just my particular platform and system?

  • Hi you may have clear text turned on
If you check your display properties (right click anywhere on the desktop and select properties) - then select Appearance / effects and make sure that the box is ticked for "use the following method to smooth edges" standard then click OK and apply and close the box down.
(you may find the opposite you prefer clear type for firefox 3.0, but personally I find it blury)
Internet explorer has the same option in internet properties/advanced/Multimedia/always use ClearType for HTML.

    • Thanks for the tip, Gog. Yes, the setting does make a difference. I had it on Standard and when I switched to Clear Type it improved the font display in Firefox. However, it created blurry text on the desktop and in some other applications so I've gone back to Standard.

Why does Firefox require Clear Type to display good text while IE7 renders great text on either setting? Does Firefox have an option to improve the text in this application alone?
  • Try using the ClearType Tuner Tool - it might get you the result you're looking for across all browsers.

Took some tweaking for me, but eventually got it working.
