  • What was it you wanted to learn?
  • before you spend any money leaning anything... try finding it for free with Google. I'm a self-taught web designer/developer and most of the stuff I learned was available as free tutorials.

    • me too, plus I've bought the odd book for reference purposes. I can't get away from enjoying learning from a book more than the screen or a print out

  • I agree. A course should be a last resort. With the amount of Google resources out there you should easily be able to learn for free.

  • The guys from Lynda.com has amazing video tutorials. But more amazing are the guys from Tutsplus. Try their websites: nettuts, psdtuts, etc

  • W3Schools Online Web Tutorials is how a lot of people in web design started there...

I'm no expert but I learn a lot from there...
  • I fully agree with the W3Schools suggestions, but that is all text and worksheets - don't forget about video.

YouTube.com has a massive number of free tutorial videos on how to build websites. If you search the site for build html site or how to use a hosting account etc. each time you see something you need explained a bit more fully with examples, that really added to understanding for me. Plus, it broke up the reading (which sometimes puts me to sleep :~)

    • I got started learning the basics at w3schools.com as well. Their tutorials are a very good primer.

Sitepoint also puts out some very good books on web design and development. The last one I read was "HTML5 and CSS3 for the Real World."

Their stuff is definitely worth checking out. Plus, if you get on their list, they send out very informative emails on the subject.

      Good luck with your learning!
  • There are some free tutorials online but I think for a proper all round understanding a proper course is definitely the way to go. Intellimon have a few different courses which are videos with supporting materials:

Just Google "complete guide to website building" and it is the first result. They also have a traffic building course called Complete Guide to Traffic and they are soon to release Complete Guide to Design.

They also have Complete Guide to Design Coming Out Soon!

I hope you find them as useful as I have!

  • There is some good free stuff online but I find that you never learn everything you want to and there is always bits missing. I think paying for a well rounded course is definitely the best course of action. Check out "Complete Guide to Web Building" it is a very detailed but easy to follow website design course which also covers many aspect of internet marketing. The videos are really easy to follow which makes all the difference!
