Hi all

I generally design sites in Dreamweaver but a couple of clients have approached me for CMS solutions so I've been looking into learning joomla... I must say it is taking me some effort to get my head round it, but with all the availale add ons and plug ims it looks highly functional and just the job. Is it the best website builder with CMS to learn, or should I be considering anything else.

many thanks, jd

Joomla is good. My main sites are built there. But I'm moving more to Wordpress. I think it's better than Joomla for most purposes. You'll find lots of arguing on the web about that, though. Obviously, it depends what your goals are, but Wordpress is now able to do most things that have in the past been better done by Joomla.

To learn about Joomla, just read their docs and forums. You'll learn most of what you need to know.

I'd say play around with the various CMS's out there like Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress and decide which one you like the best. I personally like WordPress the best due to it's simplicity and possibilities.

Joomla development is very easy to read and once you are comprehensive with them, it is very easier to create a website. There are other open source development like magento development, drupal development, oscommerce development.

I'd say if your not a "Programmer" WordPress is probably the best CMS for your average Joe. For non-programmer type of individuals I don't think you can find another with more information and more people to ask for assistance.

Joomla is good, but I suggest to use Drupal

    • Wordpress should handle most smaller businesses these days. Joomla is also excellent but is more involved. In my opinion, Drupal is the most powerful of all three but has a steeper learning curve. From what you've written here Wordpress should be fine. If you think you will be working with medium to larger businesses down the road, learning Joomla (or Drupal or both) might be beneficial.

If you're not a programmer, use Wordpress. If you're a programmer, but you don't have time, use Wordpress. If you're a programmer and you have time, use Drupal. If you're a programmer, you have time and you want the best and the fastest code, use CodeIngiter and Yii frameworks

true, just want to add one thing, if your programmer, have time and willing to learn something new, try django

as for joomla, just try it first. i think you'll have some fun while you learn it.

There are a lot of free and user-frienly CMSs. I use WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and Magento. They are really good. You can use any you want, buy you need decide what kind of the website you want. If you are going to create blog-WordPress will be the best. All other CMSs can help you to create any website you need (portal or eCommerce). For eCommerce website you will need to use extension

I would really recommend that you stay away from Joomla. I own a web design company, and made the mistake of letting someone I hired develop a site in Joomla. It takes twice as long as say Wordpress -- and the results - especially from an SEO perspective - are really weak. My impression was that "pretty urls" were a pain to do and the interface was less than intuitive even from a user perspective.

Someone mentioned Drupal - unless you REALLy know what you are doing - or have a high-paid Drupal developer that definitely knows what he/she is doing - stay away from Drupal!

I saw concrete5 mentioned in the WF somewhere - it looks worth investigating.

totally agree with @wcardinal there - joomla is a head ache - over my 8 years of freelance work - used it 3 times - and 3 times was a head ache. Even when I used the best of coders for it, just seemed to be such a head ache compared to building even the most customised backend using the framework of wordpress.

Another great CMS is expression engine - but this does really need someone that has used it in dev work before - and off course is not free sadly, but I do think its really worth the cash

I've never yelled so much at the screen as when I took over a joomla based site for a client. What a pile!!! Being so used to wordpress, joomla made me want to go and break things. ended up convincing the client to rebuild in wordpress.

Every now and then I get tempted to go back to joomla and learn a 'real' cms system. Maybe I missed something. Maybe there's some power and flexibility in joomla that I just didn't see. And I last about 15 minutes before I'm cursing my head off again.

These days there ain't nothing wordpress can't do - with a bit of persuasion, of course

I honestly think Joomla and Drupal are not as intuitive as WordPress. There is work out there for Joomla and Drupal, and you must have the right tools for both in order to be efficient with your own website design and your clients.

Wordpress has so many tools you can use that are already coded. You don't need to know any code to work with WordPress, but the more code you know, the more you can do. Wordpress can be used for anything from corporate web sites, landing pages, video landing pages, eCommerce, forums, Social media sites, membership sites, blogs, and much more.

You can customize any part of WordPress if you know the right code and have a place to test it. I suggest learning as much about Wordpress as you can because I can see it being really big in the future.

I haven't a clue how to go with a joomla site, as I always use wordpress these days. Wordpress itself has plenty of themes and plugins available for free in it's repositary, and there are also hundreds of companies that design themes and plugins for it.
You'll also find it pretty easy to use once you've explored some of the in's and out's of it.

joomla is good, typically i prefer to use wordpress cause its easier to use and much better for rapid development, especially when time is an issue. for a new cms user, joomla can be confusing, the admin panel has 100 different things going on by default, and causing a high load with suspension from your host is super easy too. with wordpress you can search for and download plugins via the admin panel, with joomla you have to go to their site, download the package, (most plugins are paid for or require you to give the developer your email address for their shady campaigns), then upload the package to the server, then go to the admin and 'install'. so i guess its about how much time you have to waste fighting the script versus a happy paying client.

I use wordpress for almost all my projects and clients. And is an awesome and fun platform to work with. You can do almost anything, from web directories to video sites to news sites ofcourse the blogs and even a social site with a bunch of people interacting together

I dont want to sound like i'm advertising or anything but I enjoy working on WP so much that I now focus my entire web design business on creating customized wordpress sites.

You should deff give wordpress a try

Hey, I have used Joomla with one of my sites and I find it really easy to use, it is a little much to understand when you first get started. It does take some time to figure out where everything goes and the difference between articles/modules and sections. Once you have your head wrapped around it, it is great to work with!

Can someone explain the benefits between wordpress and joomla? It seems joomla is more technical and a bit more cumbersome. What are the reasons someone would use joomla, or any other cms besides wp? What are your ideas?

Is joomla better than a wp cms?

I use Joomla and it is good. However, the learning is quite steep.
Wordpress is easier and very suitable for mini site or affilate site.
