Are Java and Flash useless?

I usually use Jquery sliders because almost everyone can view them.

Lately I have tried using Flash and Java sliders for more effects, but it seems some users cannot view the slider. The website using the Java or Flash, becomes much more boring without the sliders. They are interactive and huge attention grabbers.

How many of you do not have flash or java installed? Do you care when sites use it sparingly?

Do you think using these attention grabbing techniques can increase conversion because users that can see it are more engaged, or lose conversions because some people can't view the real website?

Are the people that don't have flash and java installed too behind to be considered for potential clients?

i believe that sites which work for anyone are better, though all the flash and java stuff might look nice if the page isn't informative then you will not get people sticking around anyway.
an alternative is to have a code that checks the java/flash requirements and have a simple version load for those that do not have up to date software or can't view the content for other reasons (some companies block updates as well, might not be their fault)

Jquery and other slider effects are good also, but In my own opinion Java and Flash can still help to have design in website

I agree with what Asimov said about using some code to check.

TBH, I think that the vast majority of people have them enabled but it's great to always have a fallback for the few who don't!

what would be the point of using flash or java? Javascript is on and loaded by default on every browser and on every smartphone.

Do not use flash or java unless the functionality cannot be duplicated in javascript. If it's a slideshow - there is basically nothing that cannot be done with Jquery these days.

Regarding java : I would NEVER allow a java applet to be installed on my computer. There is too much risk of security and there is no good reason to use it on a modern website unless it provides advanced functionality loke scanning directly to an app or interfacing with a computer's camera.
