  • Hi Kayvee

I'd have to say that it totally depends on your needs and abilities.

    Magento:

Pros - Very Dynamic, Huge range of features, highly customisable and great support
Cons - Difficult to code for beginners and not the simplest of backend management systems for beginners

    Prestashop

Pros - Very friendly and simple to use for beginners
Cons - Lacks some features magento provides

It's hard to give a definate answer without knowing how far you want to take the online shop but I'd say Presta for low level and beginners and then Magento for more demanding and advanced sites.

    Hope this helps

    • You have got the best possible suggestion from this man. Just to add on, I think you should first decide on the type of your website. Think all the possible steps to manage your website content and then choose the most suitable content management system for you website. I personally have used Magento and find it quite helpful. According to me, Magento is one of the most customizable and flexible eCommerce systems.
  • You should definitely go with prestashop.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Magento is going to win the eCommerce software war, hands down. I've never seen another ecommerce platform well architected and well designed as Magento
Magento is a robust e-commerce software application designed to be simple to customize
And the best magento theme is top-of-the-line, feature-rich Magento theme that’s easy to use and customize.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • Yes, Magento has proven a great software solution for e-commerce websites. It has all the functionality which a business e-commerce website need for selling their products online. Lots of web developing companies using Magento only.
  • I work with both.
I think Magento is more powerful and you will be able to get more benefits.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [1] reply
    • Magento is more powerful, but the learning curve is extremely steep. Plus, it's massive, so you'll probably need a powerful dedicated server just to get it up and running.

PrestaShop is much more lightweight and you can get your shop up and running in less than an hour. And you can do all that for free. Different modules might cost extra, especially if you go through third-party developers, but its very easy to get up and running and then make tweaks as needed.

If you're very comfortable with the developer side and have the time/resources to learn the platform, there isn't much you can't do with Magento, but PrestaShop can get you selling today. Plus, they even offer hosting services for your shop if you don't have the in-house hardware.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Definitely NOT Magento. They live on you having problems and needing help from them. That's why the whole system is over-complex and bloated. The time and money you would have to spend will soon overwhelm the seem-to-be powerfulness in it.

    Read these reviews:

    http://www.commercestyle.com/e-commerce/magneto-sucks
Magento Go Review – Sucking Support & $99 Ripoff for SSL Setup
Magento GO Review – Shopping Carts for Websites

They are not a decent company. You have to personally deal with their support to know that. They are ridiculous and arrogant.

  • Prestashop, a simpler alternative, that serves ecommerce with a nice ajax animated shopping cart and various interesting features.

    1) Prestashop and Magento both e-commerce solutions are available under Open Software License (OSL).

    2) Prestashop Installation requirements are Depends on GD library of PHP. For magento installation need a lot of extensions like PDO, CURL etc…

    3) As per as functionality concern functional features like Customer groups ,Wish list, product comparison, RSS feed, TAG in magento e-commerce. Multiple store control is also a powerful feature of magento. On the other hand statistics and membership these two functional features are available in prestashop e-commerce. For more functionality and features you can also hire magento programmer.

    Ads by Google

    4) There are not proper shipping and payment modules or any label printing option in prestashop. Magento contain all these features.

    5) Prestashop adopt smarty template engine based on PHP 5. If you see the code of prestashop you can find the code is much more, for it adopts smarty template, and increase the workload of extending development. Magento adopt Zend framework, not smarty template engine. For the programmer who is making extending development, they not only need to master PHP, but also need to handle Zend framework.

    6) Prestashop's create impressive effect on search. The search on their frontend appears faster than magento and is based on score to bring in relevance of search.

    7) Magento is much SEO friendly than prestashop.

    8) In the prestashop the upgrade strategy is not clearly defined. The upgrade impact on existing customizations is unsure in prestashop. On the other hand Magento's customization scheme depends on the excellent OOP concept of subclasses and method. And this is extensively useful in keeping the customizations apart from Magento's main releases.

    9) As mention above prestashop uses a smarty template system and javascript based on Jquery so the complete OOP coding offers a lot of flexibility for design. Magento's design seems to be difficult than prestashop so don't bother much with magento design.

    10) Flip side, the back office of Magento is less intuitive and technical structure it required more specialized skills for any adjustment.

    11) Magento Community have 130,000 members, Prestashop have 30000 members Community. Some approaches like magento team involvement, video tutorial, screen cas

    • I apologize, but I'm going to have to correct you on this. PrestaShop is about to hit 100,000 users, and they have about 280,000 members on the forum.

    • I love magento, it is useful for building shopping cart
  • I would say go with Prestashop, its pretty simple to edit and play around with and its not not too bad from an SEO point of view either.
  • My personal opinion,I suggest for Magento its easy and its customer support / help is excellent.

    • hi ., can u tell me how to import product csv from prestashop to magento...

  • Magento is a beast when you want to customize. It's a resource hog!

Opencart is a great cart for starters and seasoned eCom experts.

It boils down to cost, time, product type, and goal.
  • Well, I can't seem to install Prestashop correctly......I have uploaded the files to the main directory and nothing appears when I try to browse to the "install" page. Just does not show up. What am I doing wrong? This is a site with a WP theme already installed. I need a shopping cart and like the features of prestashop but can not get it loaded. Any help? (ps. don't get magento...)

Prestashop in my humble opinion works wonders.
  • with magento you have to be on the right server with the right amount of space because it is a huge memory hog. It will run slow if the server is not compatible.

I am personally using oscommerce right now.
  • Why you should chose Magento:

    1. Magento is developed by world's best developers.
    2. It has been considered the all features that will needed in next 5 years at lest.
    3. SEO friendly
    4. All features that meet your business needs.
    5. Many world famous stores are now converting their sores to Magento
    6. Strong support team
    7. This is open source (The basic version is free)
    8. More secure from hacking, more robust then any other application
    9. Lots of extensions are available
    10. Easy to plugin with any eye catchy themes

  • in my view Prestashop is good.
  • Unless you particularity enjoy giving yourself a migraine I'd avoid Magento.
  • Prestashop is more easy to manage and easy to use while do not need too much technical skill but Magento can more flexible but it hard to manage if not not have those technical skill.
  • Magento always, coz Magento is much SEO friendly.

    • Maybe Magento GO will better match your needs.
  • Magenta is far, far too superior

  • I love using prestashop..
it's free, easy, alot of add ons available..
    so many great themes too
  • The community version of magento is free, dunno what kinda site you can built with just the free extensions though. The other versions of magento are insane priced at $14k or $50k per year.. thats just crazy
  • i go to prestashop.
  • prestashop isn't as code intensive as magento, but it doesn't allow as much flexibility as magento. however, it is much more user friendly and easier to setup
  • Prestashop is my favorites. user interface is very clean n modern. easily to manage your online store
  • To be honest I've never used prestashop.. but since I'm a WordPress junky I'd recommend having a look at WooCommerce as well! Depends on how big your shop will be, but in most cases WooCommerce can be a perfect fit. There are plenty of premium themes that work with WooCommerce, for example at WooCommerce | ThemeForest or the WooThemes itself.
  • Magento is not that hard to learn and gives a lot of possibilities. Very flexible system and if you know a bit about programming then you'll be able to do everything with it. I run 2 stores under one hood based on magento community and i'm extremely happy with it. Wouldn't change to any other shopping cart.

  • I prefer Prestashop. This is based on My experience use this web platform, especially if you will build online store with complete features, easy to used, and look professional.
  • Hello! Personally, Prestashop is the best. Compared to Magento, I like it's features and I love it.

  • Each one of these carts has it's user-base and fans. The common wisdom regarding Magento is that the learning curve is steep and it's generally an over-kill for smaller projects. The biggest objection regarding Magento is that though its feature-rich, it's a resource-hog. Magento powered online shops are notorious slow-loaders.

Prestashop came to the foray and has garnered support very quickly. People seem to love it, even though I have no personal experience with it.

I'd recommend you throw open cart in the mix as well. It's a great, light weight yet extremely powerful cart that I have personally used on multiple successful projects.

    • I suggest Magento is one of the best, also a Seo friendly my personal opinion is Magento..
  • Its depends upon what you want to do and the size of the project, if it is a small one then Prestashop will be fine because it will be difficult to handle the nested dir’s and file although it will allow to have your own modules but Prestashop will offer more functionality.
  • If you are beginner it's always a good choice to go for Prestashop, because it's simple, free and included all the basic funtion you will need to run your business.

    • Prestashop or Opencart for beginners. Definitely.

I hate to say this again and again.
Magento is not for the basic user or someone starting out.

Oscommerce is crap. You need to modify core files in order to get a simple module to work. Zencart, slightly better, but still crap as it utilises OsCommerce as its core framework.

Ultimately, play around with various ecommerce systems and get a feel for yourself. Hands-on is always better than word-of-mouth recommendations.

    • I prefer Magento because It's professional open source platform with huge community and very good technical support teams. Magento is not as easy but any average user is able to install it. It Offers great set of features which will manage all aspects of your online shop.
  • I am using Zen Cart and Prestashop. Prestashop is great and very convenient with customizing.
  • Magneto consumes a lot of server/system resources i would stick to prestashop.
  • When I was deciding on a shopping cart platform for my company I reviewed Prestashop and many people on the forums and recent reviews had many problems. Not saying Magento doesn't and Magento is a real headache but it has much more to offer and is very flexible.

I would rely on something that is already working and doesn't cause any trouble at a basic level and go with Magento.
  • I prefer, Magento platform for E-Commerce development & Designing. Magento based e-store for your business, you can consider contacting experienced Magento developers. Also, Magento is built in is outstanding and makes it a stable and a reliable e-commerce platform for all your online shopping cart needs.
  • You know, Movable Type used to be very powerful, much more so than WordPress....
  • Prestashop if you don't have budget for a dedicated or VPS server.

Magento would only run on a VPS or a dedicated server. In the end, it depends on your needs + budget.
  • In my choice Prestashop. It is really easy to use.
  • Magento is good if you want to sell a lot of products on your web site.
  • Prestashop, certainly. I have 6 eshops, all runing on PS and very satisfied.
  • Zencart for life. LOL. Only because it sells digital goods without having to fork out another $100 for the plugin.

Pretashop looks nice, but it doesn't have what I need.

Zencart is nice if you can code and have patiences with it's roundabout logic. But once it's built all profits are FREE.
  • I refer Magento Themes. You can find many premium Magento Themes on marketplaces but Pretashop. It's the reason!
  • According to me excellent way to begin an online store is by means of using a shop template such as those provided by Prestashop Templates. One inference of an open source solution is that the shop software and eCommerce Templates are available for use by anyone wishing to make their own modificati.

  • This was the most difficult decision -but Magento, definitely . Take care
  • Its not free but take a look at CS Cart (not to expensive for what you get). Its got the best admin backend of all the ecommerce packages i've tried and has pretty much every feature you'd ever need.
    • [1] reply
    • I'd really like to use Magento because of it is so feature rich, but I'm having a hard time justifying moving to Magento for two main reasons:
      1) Slow-loading
      2) Poorly designed (over-normalized) database structure

      1) Slow loading
A big factor for me will be SEO. While Magento has excellent SEO features, I wonder if this will be overshadowed by slow-loading pages (which also counts for SEO). While if you start with OsCommerce, ZenCart, PrestaShop, etc., you can always scale up and add features, Magento's design is fundamentally flawed to be slow and clunky.
      2) Poor DB Design
This not only affects performance, but ease of customizability. I am a decent programmer and I am seeking a shopping cart software that will provide a lot of great front-end and SEO features, but for the back-end, I'm not even going to use it because I've built an ERP for my business that I'm just going to have orders submitted to via an API call from whatever shopping cart software I end up choosing.

Would love to hear comments regarding these two points as right now, the only decent shopping cart software I've found is OsCommerce 3.1 which isn't even ready yet.
