Wordpress not functional without a hosted domain?

Hey guys,


quick question here, I've been meaning to play around with wordpress but it seems like I need a domain and a host to do that. Yes I am aware that wordpress.COM has blogs but I don't wanna do blogsi wanna do websites-specifically landing pages. I hope my question is not confusing as it is, I just wanna play around with the templates so when I do purchase a domain I will know exactly what to do with the template. Thanks a lot in advance you guys are truly awesome,

    if you just want to play with it and see how you like wordpress the easiest thing to do is either install something like xampp on your pc and install it locally or you could try a free webhost like 000webhost.com
