how do i make it so that new / recent blogs dont show on the front page, but instead go straight to the recent posts on the right column? i just want my home page to stay static.

also how do i make it so that my home page is a page and not a post? i tried to make a page called home but ended up with two homes in the top menu, one which was site/ and the other was site/home/

There is an option, that lets you "sticky" posts so they appear at the top. So new ones would at least appear below.

    Post as Page:

    1) You could remove all the date, comment, author, etc code on the index, so the post will look like it is just a page. That's if you only have one post.

    2) Remove the code from the index that loads posts and using html, make the page however you want it. You can still keep the footer, header, sidebar, etc if you so wish.

Make a post sticky, or create a page and use it as front page.

      haymanpl got it right.

Create a Page and call it something like 'Home'
then go to: Settings -> Reading -> Select static page
and pull down to select 'Home'

If your theme is coded to display the page title on every page, but you dont want your home page to actually say home, you dont have the call the page anything. You can leave the title blank. When you pull down to select the static home page, youll see a blank option. Choose that one.

youll also then put a 'Recent Posts' widget in your sidebar.

Then later, if you want a link to your blog, you can create another page and call it something like 'Blog'.
go back to: Settings -> Reading -> under 'Posts Page'
      pull down to 'Blog'

Then you can add that page called 'Blog' in your main menu.
